Harmony Ultimate, Smart Control and Hub - Page 14

Just setup my Ultimate... and WOW. I love this remote! I am coming from a One, but it's so nice to have built in PS3 support rather than using the bluetooth adapter, it's great to have a hub with ir blasters that let me close the door of my cabinet. I am so happy with my purchase. The cost was much higher than I wanted to pay, but I feel it's worth it for the long term. Love the screen with favorites, love the layout and the ability to change the short and long presses so I switched the skip forward/back to be the short press, that makes more sense. Now just to figure out how to get this to work with my Mac Mini. I wish this had bluetooth support for the Mac Mini and allowed me to turn it on and off, that would make this thing perfect. But until then, I rate it 9.9/10

So as I mentioned earlier I decided to test the battery life on the Ultimate. I charged it up Saturday afternoon until it was full, the screen will tell you that the battery is full if you put it back it in the charger after it's been in for a while. I used it every day since, doing a bit of channel surfing and navigating XBMC each day, and when I tried it to use it this evening the battery was completely dead and the remote didn't light up at all. So 5 days of my average use and that's all. I'll give it another try soon.

Good test Keith, I'll do the same and see if I get the same results. JT

Well this is weird. I've tried with two devices now, but it appears that since I run my TV with my Ultimate remote, neither my phone nor tablet can successfully run an activity that involves the TV. Now I expect it to not operate the TV, obviously, however the activities will still turn on some of the devices, but that is all. I get an error message on the phone that tells me the activity failed, even though everything is power on that I need powered on, and it won't give me control, it just returns me to the home screen. So even though I can manually operate my TV, I am out of luck until my remote can turn on the TV.

That is really annoying. Another very poor design choice by Logitech. I get the warning that the TV is not operable by the hub, that's fine, but go ahead and do everything else. It'll work. Trust me. But no.

So I don't foresee me doing anymore testing on battery life as the Android apps will be completely useless to me except for activities that don't use the TV. Even though the only thing that ever needs to be done with my TV is turn it on, as I use the same input for everything, and I can do that on the TV itself, the Hub still sees this as an error condition and refuses to operate at all.

Keith I was having some problems with my IPhone and IPad the other day and found that there was an update to the Harmony app. Once I updated the app on my phone and IPad the issues were resolved. Check and see if there may be an Android app update. Just a thought. JT

How do you check if your firmware is the latest? For example, do I have to plug in my hub and have it update to check for firmware? Or is there some prompt that will let me know where there are firmware updates for both the remote and hub?

To see what firmware is on the remote select the remote menu on the screen > settings > general > about and the current firmware version will show.

To see if there is an available firmware. Select the remote menu from the remote screen > sync remote. The remote will sync and apply any updates..

I pulled the latest ones. On my phone I had the Harmony Link app initially, which connects and operates activities just fine, except for this case. I updated to the Harmony app, same thing. I guess since they recognized their mistake with iOS the Android fix should be coming.

But is there any way to check what is the latest firmware outside of plugging in the remote or hub?

Last question, I'm having a problem that I also had with the One remote. When selecting my tv in the device menu, a Panasonic GT50, adjusting the display settings left and right makes it go in 2 increments, rather than using the tv remote that works fine. For example, trying to change my contrast or brightness, if I press left or right, the number goes in increments of 2. If it's on 50, I press right once and I goes to 52 instead of 51.

I have a similar problem with my Mits, but it jumps 3 or 4 when tweaking settings. Working in the menu it's just fine. HarmonySylvain was looking into it, haven't heard about a fix yet though.

There is a repeat setting for the device, but I tried 0 and it made no difference for me.

It's right there in the instructions he provided. Look in the settings on the remote.

My Harmony 650 just died and looking at this or the 1100, is there any reason to pick the 1100 over this? I like the layout of the 1100 better but its a 4 year old remote at this point mad.gif

I haven't used the 1100 and you might look on that forum for some pros and cons on its uses. It is bigger then the Ultimate and may require two hands to use it. As far as the Ultimate it has been a strong replacement for my Harmony One and My Wife says it's the best remote I have brought in to our home. Always good to have the WAF! wink.gif

Is this remote capable of controlling two separate a/v systems, such as a living room setup and a basement theatre setup, without much hassle?
I have found the short and long press to solve initial startup problems with my tv, however my DVD player- when using the 'smart app' on my i-phone is not allowing pause and stop buttons.

Anyone have a fix for that?

the buttons seem to be grey'd out. It shows the activity name change when I rename it and then sync from the settings of the iphone. So it would appear to be seeing the changes.

Any ideas?

thanks, Steve

I believe all the Harmony remotes should be. You'd just setup all the devices, then create activities for each room.
Yes. And if both systems need to be controlled at the same time, you'll have the physical remote for one system plus the ability to control the other system via a smart phone or tablet via the app.

Excited to pick one of these up - once I find a deal.

I purchased an 1100 a few years ago to replace my One. I only used it for a few days before returning it for a 900.

The 1100 is a sharp looking piece of equipment but it was just too cumbersome for me to use. The 900 was a nice replacement for my One.

Having said that...the Ultimate is the best remote Harmony has ever created in my opinion. So far I love everything about. I am impressed with how strong the ir blasters in the hub are. I am able to use the hub and two blasters in my set up when I used to have two RF extenders with four blasters for my 900 to work properly.

I would expect this remote to only get better over time.

One thing that concerns me though after spending the cash on it is...
I wonder how it will integrate with the Xbox One when it is released. Since the hub is connected to your network, it would be great if the remote knew what was powered on if using the Xbox One for any remote functions and vice versa.

I would think this would be possible as the hub keeps everything in sync when using the smartphone app in conjunction with the Ultimate.

It would be awesome if Logitech was working on a solution for that.

The wife and kids warmed up to the Ultimate immediately. The smartphone app is just icing on the cake.

The Ultimate is simply awesome.

Hi Keith, thanks for all the help you've provided. I've learned much just from reading your posts alone!

Just wanted to ask for a clarification on the point you make above.

I'll be receiving my "Smart Control" on Tuesday from Amazon. I have my equipment in a closet behind the wall my Vizio 70 is hung on.

I'm planning on placing the IR blaster on the mantle below the TV's IR eye. So, I'll need to run audio patch cord from the blaster to my media closet.

Am I understanding correctly that I'll just need a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter from the blaster to my patch cord? Then I suppose I'll need to split the cord inside the media closet to run IR plugs into each of my components?

And finally, for any components that do not have direct IR inputs, I can attach an IR emitter (reusing one of my NextGen emitters) to the audio cord?

BTW, the little purple casing has broken off my NextGen emitter. Is that required for the IR light to function properly?

I went from an old 880 to a 1100 before jumping on the Ultimate a few days ago.

The 1100 wasn't a bad remote, but it never quite felt right to me. The touchscreen was resistive instead of capacitive, which made accuracy an issue on occasion. Plus, it was a two-handed remote, which wasn't convenient for me. The battery life left a lot to be desired as well.

Overall, the switch from the 1100 to the Ultimate has been very nice.

You're on the right track. Head on over to monoprice and you can find the adapters and 3.5mm Y cables. I doubt that casing on that emitter is necessary. It might help limit the spread on the IR signal, but that's all. IR cables are typically mono, but stereo works fine for these also.

My set up consists of a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter in each port on the hub, then a 3.5mm Y cable for each of those. I have two of the emitters from the 890 hub connected to those, as well as some 3.5mm audio cables feeding direct IR inputs on some devices. The IR emitters I have are in pairs, and those work just fine off the Y cables.

Based on all of the reviews I have decided to get the Harmony Ultimate. Any recommendations on where I can get a good deal on one would be great. I am looking to get one in the next day or 2.

Thanks,

Jim

Thanks Keith. I can get the adapter at monoprice. I'd love to be able to get a long (20+ ft) IR emitter from them too, but they don't appear to have them. Closest I found was a 25ft IR emitter from Amazon for around $15 shipped

Purchased ultimate and smart control last week. Upgrade over 900. Loving both so far. I have the ultimate in theater room and smart control in bedroom.

One question. On the simple remote, is there any way to select a specific device so I can access its buttons. Like if I have watch TV activity going, is there any way to switch the device to TV so I can change some settings then go back to controling the STB. That is the only thing I haven't been able to figure out. I know I can use my phone, just wondering if I can do it on the remote.

No, not possible with the Smart Remote, only with the iPhone or Android Apps.

I understand that each of the 3 activity buttons at the top can be programmed for "press and hold" to store an additional activity. So, you have the capacity to store a total of 6 activities.

Assuming you have not already used that feature, could you create an activity to do your TV tweaks?

I purchased the Smart Control the other day but have yet to install it. I was reading App Store reviews and there are a lot of complaints about the iPhone/iPad app losing connection. Is this cleared up with the 2.1.2 fix?
