I did perform that step and changed the name of the folder to "AVCHD". Hopefully someone who has had luck with this particular player can tell me what they did.
I wouldn't do that, frankly. I'd keep the two folders named BDMV and CERTIFICATE, and just name the disc AVCHD.
Unfortunately (for you ), I'm not home so I can't check, but you may want to try changing your BDP's audio setting from "direct" to "source," or whatever the two options are.

It's not your imagination, it is a crapshoot. Sometimes a particular player will only like particular brands of discs. Sometimes burning slower helps (as opposed to leaving it at "max"). The fact that you have a few that work is a good sign.
With your next order of discs, get a couple of re-writables.
