Looking for research info on subs

post #1 of 7

Well I just purchased my first set of klipsch speakers (KG 4.2 and KG 1.2v center) and they sound great, but my current sub (Yamaha yst-sw216) is basically useless with my new speakers. So my question is when looking for a good sub what do you look for?

To start, it would help if you were to answer some (ideally, most) of the questions in post #1 of this thread:
1. Your budget.
2. Size requirements/limits.
3. Room dimensions.
4. Primary uses.
5. Listening habits.
6. Appearance requirements.
7. Timeframe.

Otherwise, you might get recommendations for a $2,300 Seaton SubMersive HP, when all you've got is an 10' x 12' room and $250 to spend. wink.gif

Just realized that my reply didn't directly address the OP's question... d'oh! redface.gif ...so here goes again:

I look for a combination of the following:
- a sub with good specs;
- a sub with positive reviews (both professional and non-professional);
- a sub that looks good (because aesthetics do matter);
- a company with a reasonably good (or better) reputation; and
- positive word of mouth from people I deem to be knowledgeable and trustworthy.

(The list is not in any particular order, and may not be exhaustive.)

Thank for the feed back guys.
I have been looking at the spec on subs but what numbers should I be looking for on subs? Watts.... Ohms.... Herts...... And what exactly do these specs mean as far as the performance?
