F8500.. OR .. ZT60 ????? - Page 18

Please don't actually compare input lag on my account wink.gif

Just do it for the tv enthusiasts with PS3s and Xboxes that truly test the versatility of a tv....I know they really really like shadow detail and overall brightness. They'd make the perfect torture test most likely.

I still think the screen uniformity difference and the rich detail that a very large contrast ratio gives you justifies the switch from an edge-lit to a plasma though regardless.

Like you, I seem to learn a new metric every time I do this smile.gif

I don't know if it makes any difference, but it's not an LED lcd that I have. I could not get passed the horrible screen uniformity. i don't know what cinema black is? I generally turn off any extra processing/features. I have a LN40D630(LCD) and PN50B540(plasma). of the two the LCD is actually noticeably blacker, very disappointed with the plasma. the only TV I've owned that produced nice blacks and shadow detail was a Hitachi RPTV of which I do not remember the model number.

i'm looking for a tv that can look like it's pretty much black even when displaying all dark scenes. even with bias lighting, neither of my current flat screens can do this, they only look black when there is also bright content on the screen

btw, I think my new metric this time around is input lag. I had pretty much written off the ST60 from my list(wanted an excuse to go with the vt60 or zt60 anyway) because of the talk about input lag. then I heard the f8500 may be even worse. which led me to try researching my current setup and basically determined that I probably have well over 100ms of lag. I don't notice this at all, but I want to use it as the excuse for why I get pwned anytime I try playing online:p so maybe I won't completely write off the st60 either. although I've pretty much convinced myself to take home the f8500 and try it at home, and if I don't like it wait for the zt and maybe drop down to the 60 so it's not a huge jump in price.

So is there a 65" ZT model coming or only a 60"? Also, what is the date of the shoot out?

65" in NA yes, shoot out is May 10-11
yeah, I was given quotes on both 60 and 65 inch models.

I hope it doesn't end up being one of those things where 3yrs from now I have an extra 600 bux and wish my tv could be 5inches bigger... but hey, I could just sit closer:cool:

I dont think anyone knows this. Right now Magnolia\Best Buy has a exclusive window on the ZT60. It appears most places places outside Best Buy\Magnolia will have the ZT60 late June\August.....So if you want it soon the only way to do this is via Magnolia\Best Buy. Otherwise if you can wait might I suggest forum sponser Cleveland Plasma?

List - $4100 and imo it'll stay that way. This is not an item that will be discounted. There are those that believe some retailers (and eBayers) will hold on to stock and boost price above list.

+1 , Chris is usually able to offer best prices, and no tax for most states (until the Online Sales Tax act goes through at least)

I dind't get to hop on the pre LED LCD's so don't know anything about them personally, sorry.

Alhtough i do zero gaming, input lag is still a good indicator of whether you are likely to suffer lip synch issues as well. On the es8000 the lag was pretty bad and it wasn't consistent based on how the screen used its dynamic settings, so I was constantly tweaking my receiver delay to get the sound to synch up right. If you just listen to sound out of the tv speakers, the tv generally adjusts for its own lag though so only need to worry if you use a receiver.

I really can't overstate this, I will NEVER use a TV's internal speakers. I don't even use the internal speakers on the tv in the bathroom...

the tv I bought isn't old, like it doesn't predate LED. I actually took home a couple LED's and had to return them because they were unwatchable in the dark for me. look amazing with the lights on, but the clouding was right in the middle of the screen and could not be avoided. so I took the CCFL backlit version of the same model instead. i'm sure there's not much difference though.

anyway, it still sounds like you're talking a lot about extra processing features(dynamic settings?), things that I never use. so if that's the only problem it really isn't even a concern for me.

anyway, not sure why we need to be discussing led's or lcd's at all. my only point I was trying to make was that with bright content on the screen, I don't notice floating blacks. what really bugs me is when an all dark scene still lights up my room.

Agree, I hate that too.

i managed to get down to the store that had the f8500 set up in there dark room and viewed the tv with all the lights off. it wasn't as dark as my basement, but it was similar to what a set up with bias lighting would be like.

anyway, there was definitely a noticeable difference between lights on and lights off, but it still looked very good in the darkened room. it looked good enough that i'm pretty convinced(barring some shockers from the shoot out) that i'll be bringing home the F8500 and will only return it for the zt if i'm really unsatisfied with it at home.

it's definitely not perfect, i suspect a completely black screen would still put out enough light that i could navigate the room safely, but at least it wouldn't be bright enough to read by like my current tv's(haha, slight exaggeration)

also, i think samsung might be pulling a little trick with the bezel. it being slightly brighter might be maybe the blacks appear to blend in even better. the design and stand are starting to grow on me, but it still looks ugly compared to pretty much every LED on the market

Is the F8500 the brightest plasma of all times?

i don't know if it's the brightest ever, but it's brighter than i need a tv to be, that's for sure. i actually don't know if it has one or not, but this is a tv i would definitely be using the eco sensor feature. i can't imagine using the same backlight setting in a darkened room.

with the set on 'movie' and just default settings it's brighter than i have my LN40D630 set at home(backlight at 18max, 7min using eco sensor). i'm honestly trying to NOT get sucked in by the brightness. i'm pretty sure i won't take advantage of that in my theatre room, it's really hard not to consider it an advantage still.

Thanks for sharing your experience.
Nice point about the bezel. Good that they did that trick.

How did the design grew on you? started to like it? The LED F8000 design is breathtaking.

I wonder if Samsung has used the F8500 design for the LED version in Europe why they don't use the F8000 design for the Plasma? Sure the TV has to be thicker but the floating effect is totally worth it.

That is what Samsung has been claiming in their marketing and I have to believe them as many users said it can be really bright.
No other company producing plasma ever bothered about the brightness of the technology, all they do is to get blacker and that is one reason I think the plasma sales have been shrinking year on year.

I also think many F8500 owners are first time plasma owners which is good to revive this market.

People who buy TVs always tend to look at the brightest sets. It is a fact and that is why companies put their TVs on torch mode. To me many plasmas and specially Panasonic ones tend to look like E-Ink televisions. No exaggeration. The very dim screen and the grayish whites just put me off. Except for Samsung's E8000 which had more subtle grayish whites but with pinkish tint.
Haven't seen the F8500 yet and I hope it will be the TV to change my mind and idea about plasmas.
