Why is an HDD performance unacceptable for a server OS drive? Ignoring boot time and faster application loading time as I still don't think this is relevant in a server that rarely boots or loads applications.
The delay and increased wait times of nearly anything I do when using a HDD as my OS drive is simply unacceptable.
The improvements in performance I see with SSD are clearly worth the cost of an SSD *to me*. Your value system might be different.
I'm not sure how else to say it. That extra second it takes to remote connect, or that extra second to bring up the server dash board, Etc.... It's really basically the improvements you'd see in a windows 7 based PC. There is not much different with a whs server. The only difference is people might use the server differently and choose to be satisfied with the lower performance. The performance difference exists.
I'm not sure if your asking why/how SSD is better or if your really asking "can I live without an SSD"
Different questions. On first question SSD is clearly better at everything and HDD isn't competitive at all at anything. Second question has many answers.
I know waiting a second or two to remote connect, or a few seconds of lag when trying to install a program, or do a reboot isn't a big deal for some. For some others like me its frustrating because I'm accustomed to a high level of performance on other machines. This makes the difference a HDD makes noticeable.
Lets put it this way... If you gave me two identical machines except one being HDD and SSD... It's going to be obvious which is which.
I'm not sure you really asking what you want to ask.
There isn't really any debate about why or how SSD is better. It's clear SSD excels at random IOPS and raw speed making it a much better OS drive. It's as simple as that.
The differences you see in windows 7 are also there in a server running WHS. If your using your server in a way where your satisfied without SSD there's nothing wrong with that.
The debate should be about is it worth it to use SSD in server. There really isn't any debate at all if SSD is better. It is.
