I purchased the UN55F7050 from BJ's and I expect it to arrive next week. Is this the proper forum to be using?

The funky crosshatch/moire is a photography artifact; see annotations starting from the bottom left. Notice that the pencil line is offset from the left edge by maybe 5 pixels so you actually see a strip of light, then dark.

A Samsung tech came out to look, but he did not have any experience with 2013 models. He gave my photo to Samsung and they apparently agree it's a flaw and wanted to replace the panel. (I'm going to return it to Costco instead.)

I have seen the pencil lines on 55F7100 display models at both Costco and Bestbuy (both worse than my panel). I am trying to decide if I should bother trying another panel from Costco, or just go with a different brand. Hoping some other owners can help me decide!

I ask specifically about the 55" model because I have not seen these pencil lines on other sizes. (Maybe it has to do with the micro bezel?)

Are there really no 55" model F7100 owners here who can comment? I thought it would be the most common. :-O

It should be easy to check using the built in test patterns. Just go to Support->Self Diagnosis->Picture Test. The first two should show any pencil line on the left if present.

No, unfortunately the F7100 outputs Dolby 2.0- due to HDMI Copyright protections.

I also have DirecTV and a Xbox360, use (2) Toslink (optical) cables from the sources direct to the receiver- that's my set up.

The direct optical cables will output Dolby Digital 5.1.

I have mine hooked up through the the ARC port on the TV and my receiver and get 5.1

Making the gamble. Going to replace my 60 inch sharp samsung for the 55 samsung.

Hey all,

I just received the f6400 which I'm enjoying white a bit. Was wondering if anyone could chime in on some of the questions below since I know there is a lot of overlap with the technology in both the f7100 and f6400.

1.) The Hdmi black level is grayed out to me on my stb feed and only enabled on the ps3. I'm not sure why since it's the same picture mode. What enables this?

2.) Does anyone know what color settings and specific display settings I should be using on the ps3 and box itself?

3.) I definitely notice some jutter with the motion settings on while panning the camera quickly in games. I've tried clear and the custom settings I've seen mentioned in some calibration posts but believe I'll need to leave this off. Does the higher refresh rate of the 7100 do anything in regards to the motion of fast scenes if I'm not using the smoothing settings on? I loved how smooth the last of us looked with it on, I just wish I could find a way go have it look that smooth without any vertical artifacts/banding/jutter.

4.) By far the biggest thing I'm dealing with... No ghosting or clouds anywhere in the center of the screen. But all around the edges about 2.5 inches wide the image is slightly brighter, when viewing brighter scenes/backdrops. You can see it if you look for it. I noticed it the instant I turned on the set and was in the light blue Samsung setup screen. As for the flashlight effect I see a tiny bit at the bottom left on dark scenes but no where near enough for me to exchange the set.

The lighter band on the edges though may make me swap the set. I don't know if this is normal. Also I don't know if the 7100 is better about this and number 3 above.

I've had no banding issues but did have the bouncing white pixel issue. It was solved by tuning out of HDMI 1 to HDMI 2 and in 30 seconds go back to HDMI 1. I had a similar problem with a 61 inch Toshiba DLP and changing the input source solved that problem. I have a Dish 722 high def box and this may be causing the problem.

Yes it is the same as the 7100 sold only at Sams and Costco.

Heh. The 55's micro bezel is really nice too, so I think you may appreciate the "downgrade" in the end.

Here are pictures of the issue I'm seeing on my F6400. If you look at the left and right edges of the screen and you'll see this faint line that runs up/top. It's hard to capture with my phone but gives you an idea. Hopefully, people can see it and tell me if this is normal and/or something typically seen on LCDs (or the 7100 series for that matter). I'm new to LCDs coming from DLP:

I have the 46" and the pencil lines you are talking about are there but man you really have to look for them. This is not the kind of panel issue I would even worry about since I can't see them unless I get about 1 foot or less from the screen and even then, I have to really look for them because they are so light and not wide enough to even care about. When panel problems exist that cause poor viewing due to distractions from flashlighting, light bleed, dead pixels, etc, then it's time to repair/exchange the TV. Mabye in my case, the issue is just less noticable due to screen size or is really just not as bad for some other reason. I'm pretty sure this is very common for these edge lit TV's that are using the ultra-thin bezel. Have you looked at the 60" with the slightly larger bezel size. I bet this area of the screen is covered up & will not be seen. Any 60" owners care to respond? Either way, I hope this helps you.

Thanks for the info! On my 55" the lower 1/3rd of the pencil line is visible from 9 feet away, hard for me not to notice. The upper 1/3rd is nearly invisible even up close, as you describe. So maybe the darker line I've got is indeed an abnormal flaw.

Great advice...ARC works if your Receiver is ARC compatiable...my Samsung HT-BD2T is not.

Honestly, smaller sized HDTVs look sharper for all source material including SD.

60" and above are best for 1080p and High Mpeg / High Bit-rate 1080i sources.

720p, 480i (Standard definition) and Average 1080i looks better on smaller sets.

I see it, that's a light leakage issue as the bezel is not completely aligned.

I had a similar, yet lesser issue with my ES7100 and had the unit replaced.

How's you F7100, no new issues I hope.

I'm actually looking forward to Fw. Ver. 1106 as my DirecTV has mild Mpeg Macroblocking with fw. 1105.

Thanks! I was going crazy trying to figure out what it was. Sounds like a replacement is in order then.

There are no new issues. Thanks for asking. For the most part, Im totally enjoying the TV and trying not to look for any new issues. The picture is pretty darn good these days. I'm still blown away with the better specs than the F8000's and always believed they were at least equally really good to my eyes. I'm not sure if I'll be trying any new firmware soon but I'm sure in the end there will be better improvements with this TV series since there are known bugs more in the APPS as opposed to picture quality. One things for sure...When I do finally do a firmware update again, I will ALWAYS do a full factory reset afterwards...... Including the re-programming thing.eek.gif

Yes, the TV sends 5.1 programming to the receiver. Make sure you have the latest HDMI cable and plug it into HDMI-2 where it says ARC (audio return channel). Problem is that most Smart TV programming is in 3.1. Take Netflix with Super HD. Most TV shows are 3.1 even if it says 5.1. But a movie, such as The King's Speech, is in fact 5.1.

Amazon is actually replacing my TV for the 3rd time due to banding. The exchange/return process is really simple. I called them and explained the problem. 2 days later a new TV is delivered and the old one taken away. CEVA is the delivery company that has been doing all the work in my area.

Tik, my 65f7100 was delivered yesterday as I purchased from Amazon as well. I too have banding issues when watching the Open Championship. It seems to be far more noticeable with golf than anything else. The Big Ten Network was replaying college football, and it didn't appear to be much of an issue with a football broadcast as opposed to golf. Yet, baseball also showed banding when the camera panned across the outfield. I did the gray screen test, and it didn't seem to be as bad as other photos I've seen. However, like others have said, the banding seems most prevalent with a predominantly green background. I'm hesitant to exchange as all other issues (clouding, flashlighting, dead or stuck pixels) with led tv's are pretty much nonexistent. Only a slightly lighter bottom left corner on an all black screen in a completely dark room. The banding is pretty annoying when watching the golf, but like I said I'm pretty hesitant to try an exchange as of now.

deadthree024,

Thanks for the feedback. If the banding on my new TV is less than or equal to the previous TV then I will probably keep it. Hopefully there are no other issues with the TV. From experience the exchange process with Amazon is easy. It's just a gambling on the next TV.

I am happy to finally say I'm 100% satisfied with my tv. Replaced my 60 in for the 55 samsung panel. Wow. It's a whole other world. Not even just picture quality but also build quality. Calibrated and tested for all those screen issues. I have 0 flashlighting, clouding, banding, dead pixels, light bleed or those PENCIL lines. Finally just a beautiful uniform screen. Would highly recommend those with 60 inch with issues to look into getting the 55inch.

In system settings go to general. It's the first option I believe. It's not in the area you adjust picture settings.

That's due to the placement of the LEDs behind the panel. They run up and down left and right sides. My 60 inch had this and I found it very distracting. One of the reasons I decided to have it replaced. If it doesn't bother you and you have no other issues I would keep it and not worry about it. But it's a very common issue with led edge lit displays.

One more thing , it could also be banding as well.

Hmm okay. So this is not a bezel misalignment issue during the construction of it, like previously suggested?

2 other quick questions. I ordered through amazon. Does anyone know if they will let me see if the new tv is better/worse before accepting it? I don't want to swap out for a worse set.

Second, my 6400 is native to 120hz. Does the 240hz on the 7100 have any impact on motion for games if I have the artificial motion stuff turned off?

I could be a number of reasons why it's doing that. Game mode is great in my opinion and all the motion settings are greyed out. Motion looks great in game mode.
