Does anybody know if the F7100 and F7050 series can output 5.1 channel sound? Or does it only output 2 channel sound? I'm considering getting a 5.1 ch soundbar system which only has optical inputs requiring me to connect via the tv instead of through a blu-ray. Thanks for any help on this

Only from over the Air Broadcasts output 5.1 Dolby Digital.

All other HDMI sources are copy protected and output 2 channel Dolby sound.

You can still run a Optical Cable from your sources to the soundbar.

As I recall the TV will be able to output 5.1 sound only when watching a over the air 5.1 brodcast using the TV Source input. I also have read that it does work when streaming some of the Smart Hub Apps like Net Flix but not all of them. I'm not sure which one's though since I don't have a 5.1 sound system. This information came from reading the forums from the ES series and I think it still applies to the F series as well. Hope I didn't make this more confusing but thats all I can remember about that. Hopefully others that have a 5.1 sound system using the optical output can provide more information for you.

Its good, Cinema Black is free from dimming.

I still only use Low, maybe Medium and High work on a higher backlight setting.

My F7100 had pretty good contrast, and the picture looked pretty good. Couple things though. The st60 was a 60 inch for 1499, and my f7100 was a 55 inch, so right there was probably unfair to the 7100, cause you put it up, and notice how much smaller it looks. A fairer comparison would have been a 60 inch f7100, but the price is $500 more, and I would get a sharp panel frown.gif. The second thing was as I mentioned, my motion was skipping and studdering. Pirate mentioned above that Auto 2 was the setting I should have been using instead of Auto 1. Whats even crazier is that I took my st60 back on sunday at noon, and i tried the sammy sunday night, and freaked out, so I went to best buy first thing mon morning, and they still had my st60, but then they sold it to me at open box price of 1280. I told them I would rather pay full price, but they said they couldnt, so I bought a 2 year warranty instead. But here i am 2 days later, I thought I would be perfectly content gaming on my 32 inch lg in my office, (which, anyone looking for an amazing gaming tv, its new, its a lg ln5300. has crazy low input lag, and no blurring), but then I watch the Xbox one presentation yesterday, which is designed to sit in your living room, and tie everything together, and now I'm thinking, the st60 is going to be a problem, cause the input lag is too high to game on. In the end, I'm torn, because the st60 is a much better value for the money. But its not a good gaming tv. And with having 2 sons that also like to game, I think it may have to go back , again. I just worry that best buy might refuse my return.

Have you noticed any black (overdrive) trailing on the F7100 while gaming? It's a characteristic of VA panels in general and looks like phosphor trailing on older plasma sets.

I can confirm that HBO GO outputs 5.1 audio from optical. I could not get any Netflix programming to do though, it just may be the shows I chose.

Its a good thing I have not had this calibrated yet, as the reset put it back to factory condition resetting all my color settings. I had to go through the entire setup process again. once I was done, I started playing the same video that I had seen the boxes before, and after about 1/2 hour, they had not come back. So hopefully whatever it was, the reset killed it. I have not watched an entire movie through it yet.

I asked her if she found any info on it, and she said no, she had never heard of it before, so I'm guessing they were hopping the reset would fix it.

One thing I noticed was that I only saw the boxes on videos that did not have the full 16:9 ratio encoded. The files that are full 16:9 and include the black letterbox bars as part of their encoding did not have the problem. It only happened when the videos had those bars clipped off and the tv was required to show those black bars as blank areas. It seems like it might be some sort of screen saver error when the tv detects there is no image in the bars after 5-6 minutes.

I have an open ticket with them. Once I get some time to sit down and test it out again for a longer period, I will let you know how it goes.

I would recommend trying the Reset to see if that fixes it for you. that is if you have not paid to have someone professionally calibrate it. If you have, write down every color/contrast setting you can find so you can go back.

Incase anyone would like to see what I'm talking about, here you go. They move fairly quickly from the right to the left.

You can now add me to the list of UN55F7100 owners who have this problem. All I did was put Skyfall on pause to go upstairs real quick and when I came back, dancing white blocks across the top bar greeted me.Now to exchange for the same or find another TV in the same price range that will perform just as well.

I finally got some time to play games and I really see what you mean now. I wouldn't call it "micro dimming" though, since it's a global backlight change. During gameplay in a simple rythm game with colorful animating backgrounds (Project Diva F), the backlight was flickering almost constantly. Uncool.

This behavior is probably a deal breaker for me, I don't see how anybody can tolerate that behavior. It remindes me of ABL on Plasmas, which is terrible in games too.

Has anybody with service mode confirmed that the dynamic backlight cannot be defeated in Game/Standard mode with any hidden settings? It's strange they force this on certain modes only.

So...let me get this straight. Right now I have my ps3, Xbox, DVR and HD DVD HDMI (a and v) fed into the TV and then a toshlink out from the TV to my av receiver. So using that set up I am getting only 2.1? In order for my 5.1 I have to run the toshlink cables from my sources to the receiver and let the toshlinks handle the audio and let the HDMI handle the videos only? Son of a bbbbb

So basically, I want 5.1 from 4 sources. I have enough HDMI and toshlink cables for either setup. So even though I have the toshlink running from the TV to the av receiver, it only passes stereo from the hdmi inputs and my av receiver outputs stereo.

(PS3 > HDMI (a&v) > TV) + (TV > toshlink > av receiver) = stereo output by av receiver.
(PS3 > HDMI (video only) > TV) + (PS3 > toshlink > av receiver) = 5.1 output by av receiver

Right?

So did you buy the same 7100 you had as an open box? lol

So what was your first impression of the PQ after coming from the ST60 this time around.

Thanks for the replies on my audio question. I have a few more to followup which are probably basic for most of you. If I output audio through HDMI to a 5.1 ch soundbar would that provide true 5.1 ch sound or is it the same issue as going through the optical cable. Also, if I decide to get the 5.1 ch system (the new vizio soundbar) and hook-up the blu-ray directly to the soundbar via the optical cable instead of through the tv, will that allow me to get the true 5.1 ch sound? If not, does anybody have recommendations on a 5.1 ch soundbar system that would be good with this tv? Thanks

Just picked up a 7100 with TD01 panel. It is replacing a un6400, I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the black level. I was expecting it to be a huge leap from the 6400. I personally don't think it has even the same black level performance. When watching a full screen it appears fine , but if the black bars are present , they are dark gray at best. Is this normal?

Looks good, glad auto 2 is acceptable.

Even though this issue crops up rarely, this could be firmware related, and once Samsung gets enough complaints, they will look into this. BUT... Since it seems so rare it could take some time. Have you done a firmware update yet? If not, I would do the update to Ver 1103 (good working version) but I would also do a factory reset first before the update since it also helped with the issue. If you still get the issue after doing these steps, then mabye it is related to the TV itself and a exchange would be a good idea. If your current panel has no dead pixels and has good uniformity, then I would really try and keep it since the next one could have issues beyond the crazy little dancing white blocks. My first F7100 had several dead pixels and also went back. Good luck in what ever you decide to do though. Those little dancing blocks remind me of the pong video game days of long ago.

Well, I hate to post this, as I"m sure as soon as I go home, it will happen again, But since the reset, I have not seen the boxes. I did the reset after the firmware update by the way.
I would suggest trying that first. Good luck.

On a side note, I'm new to the forum and would like to put up some pics of my entertainment room. Where would I do that? Thanks.

No, for day time viewing with backlight -14/ eco sensor -6 and Cinema Black- Low the bars look black.

Maybe at night they look a little greyish-black (very little).

On my es7500 I have my backlight set to 9 and eco sensor on 2. I think people keep their TV brighter then they need to unless you are really battling strong daytime light but at night drop that bad boy down and you will see better blacks and better screen uniformity and same goes for daytime viewing. Also, you will have less eye strain and fatigue by dropping the brightness down.

Take advantage of that eco sensor as it serves a great purpose and will always give you the best veiwing experience. Also note once you turn your backlight up or down you will need to turn the eco sensor back on again as it resets to off.

Some people always mention that eco sensor should be turned off to stop black screens from brightness flucuations. This setting has nothing to do with that so do not be scared to use it. So if you want to see how much better your screen looks in the dark, shut off all your lights tonight and drop the brightness down to 2. I promise you that you will then see that brighter is not always better and it will make your nightime viewing much better.

I have a D6900 stand attached and a while back in this thread a forum member had ordered a ES8000 stand.

I'm about 85% sure the ES8000 stand is compatible.

I also picked up a td01 55 inch, black look really good, not the best viewing angles though , guess its draw back of led. Anyone know if td01 is samsung ?
The TD01 is the Samsung-manufactured panel.

I have played with the settings and just cannot get deep enough black level on this set. I am going to BB this morning and look at the 8000 series picture. Looks like if its a better image then I will have to return the one I have and get the 8000. I will keep you posted .

I was going to get the 60F7100 till I saw the LG 60LA8600. Then it was a choice between that and the 55F8000 at the same price. The LG had every bit as good of blacks and contrast as the Samsung and a buttery smooth look to the motion. It was hard decision as both sets really have a nice look both picture wise as well as build looks. I ordered the LG and it should be ready for store pickup monday or Tuesday.

Thanks. It's just a nightlight. It's an led light bar from ikea that is connected to a timer that comes on at night, so even if the tv isn't on, it's still on at night.
