i just bought a PN51F5500 and i would like feed back on what issues if any that you are having. i started this in hopes of having a thread for the F5500

when i first got my PN51F5500 I was torn didn't even know if i was going to keep it

now we just had a firmware update.

1.This firmware is for TV Model(s): LED F5500/F6300/F6350/F6400/F6800/F7050/F7010, PDP F5500

2.The version is 1102.1

3.This firmware update will improve the following:

- Improves picture quality.

- Resolves compatibility issue with Fitness Game Bike

i must say that the improvement in picture quality has solidified my choice in buying this PN51F5500 i know there will be more updates.

so here i am I have a PN60E8000 and a PN51F5500

hi,

can you comment on black levels, image retention, brightness pops/hocky pops and input lag for gaming if you do on this tv. I am in the uk and their is not much info about for this tv.

last year I had many st50 TV's with banding/uniformity issues and before that had Samsung d series which had the brightness/hocky pops. I am just looking for a cheap decent performing tv without the issues mentioned above so I am looking at this tv.

yes I am aware of that but that is for the 60inch version and going by previous years there has been performance differences between the 51's and bigger screens ie: black levels and ir so it would be nice to hear comments from you guys on the 51inch version:)

If you take a look in that thread although named for the 60" I believe all versions are being discussed....Not sure well get much stats on the black levels as I ahvent seen one measured, the best youll do until someone calibrates or has thier set calibrated is opinions

How you compare black level in light room on same material side by side f5500 and e8000.

I was in shop and watch side by side e8000 and f5000 not 5500 and 5000 was gray not black.

now this is just my opinion not gospel i did not put a meter to either one but to my eye the blacks appear nice and black on both

the blacks on my F5500 are Black and i mean black they are not Gray now if the sun is shinning right on the TV no TV can fight through that even my E8000 hates direct sun and just before sunset this happens.

the E8000 has the pro panel and the F5500 just has the real black panel if i were to move them side by side which i won't do but what i can do is put Avatar on each set and go back and forth to see which one in my opinion does better or if they are to close for me to tell the diff.

I'll have to do it at night because the viewing enviroment on room is brighter then the other

I do find that the E8000 holds up a little better in a bright room then the 5500 they are diff panels and the 5500 is more refective IMO

I was worried about Image retention as well i just replaced a C7000 and it was bad when i watched baseball those static images would take a while to fade away But i'm happy to say this 51F5500 is not bad i watched two game one on ESPN then on MLB both with tickers and scores and after i didn't see any signs of IR if i would have done that with my old C7000 i would have to swipe the TV for hours.

i did watch a hockey game and didn't notice anything popping but i was in Movie Mode with warm 2 which make the ice not so white maybe i'll try in standard mode with cool temp and see what happens.

i'm not a real hockey person more Baseball and Football.

I have a Samsung PN60F5500 for a couple of days, ive noticed some dimming on CBCHD hockey here in Canada. I tried watching TSNHD (another hockey game) and didnt noticing anything. So maybe it is just the one channel? I find it suspicious though and very annoying as it constantly keeps dimming on its own, and all the eco and energy saving features are off. Seems to only do it on hockey (white ice)

i just changed to NHL NETWORK Boston and toronto i do see some flashing i changed to standard mode not sure if it's the tv or the feed i see camera flashes but there is some pops going on as well. PN51F5500

Thanks for confirming Bargervais, I have the same problem on the 60 inch model. I also cant figure out if it is the feed or the TV. Seems to only be the toronto boston game. I was watching the Washington+New York hockey game on HD and I don't see it as bad as the Boston Toronto Game, which I suspect it would be the feed. There seems to be some quick flashing on the Washington New York Game, but watching the white ice looking for it maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me. I havnt noticed this flashing/dimming on any other stations or when watching a movie.

I only have Firmware 1102, It doesnt have the ".1". The TV says I have the latest firmware version when I try to update it. There wasnt an update when I took it out of the box (had it 2-days). Is there a more recent update? If so it's not showing up for me.
i think thats the same one and your up to date if you go to the menu go to support then self diagnosis then picture test then ok then yes then you will see software version

Seems to be only hockey, well that one hockey game anyway (Toronto and Boston). I was also watching Toronto and Rays, and didnt see anything suspicious there

Yes I have the same software version as you. I can't comment on any changes as I've always had this software version. Blacks and colours are impressive to me, especially when watching Blu-Ray. Avatar in 3D was beautiful. I am going to try the settings you posted, as I have been unable to find any others online. I find standard mode is much better than movie mode. Did you use a calibration disc to get your settings or just eye balled it?

Does this Tv have the frame interpolation feature also known as motion flow? I thought that feature was only on the F8500 series!

It is probably the auto brightness limiter (ABL) kicking in. This is common to all plasmas and this type of brightness fluctuations is visble on very bright white scenes, such as hockey ice. There's a lot of info on this site and the internet about ABL. Some plasmas do better than others when handling ABL.

The feature im looking for is called MJC or motion judder canceller. Its under the advanced settingin in the F8500 series.

I just bought this set last night and switching between 2 different hockey games I'm getting flickering, auto dimming and brightness pops. I've tried a bunch of different picture settings and made sure all the Eco features are off and it's still doing it, it is very VERY noticeable, it's too bad because I think it's a fantastic tv otherwise.

If this isn't something that can be resolved its going back.

Edit: mine is the pn60f5500

Hey Jroc26, I have the same thing going on with mine(PN60F5500). I've noticed it on the hockey also, with the screen dimming, then a few seconds, then dimming again, then returning. It is very distracting and annoying. I havnt noticed it on any other content or blu ray, but it would be difficult to reproduce as it seems to be with high levels of white like the ice surface.
