I was close to pulling the trigger on this tv until i started reading the reviews. I had a PS51E530 which had the EXACT same dimming/brightness issues. After months and months of complaining to Samsung who said there was no issue despite me showing it to their own service engineers, they "upgraded" me to the E550. The E550 had the same issues but i ended up keeping it as the kids loved the 3d and the wife was getting fed up with me messing with the tv to try and eliminate the issues.

To this day neither the E530 or the E550 had the issues fixed and unfortunately it appears that this annoying issue is still present in this years models. There were literally THOUSANDS of posts last year of people having the same issue and Samsung remained ignorant to the issue.

I hope i'm wrong but don't hold your breath in Samsung ever fixing this fluctuating brightness issue. In the meantime i'm going to hold off and continue searching for another tv.

Unfortunately most Plasma TV have an ABL built into the tv with your higher end TV like VT60 and F8500 a properly Callibrated TV there are setting on plasmas that minimize (not necessarily eliminate) this from occurring. Getting a Samsung off of "standard" is just one of them.

i'm going to stop obsessing over the brightness pops with hockey because thats the only place i see it other then that it's the only major issue i'm having the color and blacks are great i know this isn't an F8500 but man it looks great lets hope samsung updates the firmware to reduce pops but i'm ok with this TV

Both my tv's are calibrated to within an inch of their life. Your correct that some settings will minimalise the issue but its still quite noticeable. The ABL thing is common in most plasmas but its the way its implemented in the Samsungs with the ABL being overly aggresive compared to say Panasonic.

One thing no one has mentioned in this thread from what I've seen is the use of a pentile matrix on the 60". Can anyone with the 60" comment on this and whether or not it is noticeable? This is pretty much the deciding factor for me on whether to purchase this tv. Also, can anyone comment on buzzing? I am currently, though only for a few more months, living at 7500' elevation, and am worried the buzzing will be too much to handle.

Thanks in advance.

If possible, it's best to see it yourself. Also, depending on how far you sit from the TV.
I saw the Samsung PS60E531 (PN60E530) pentile, and can slightly see it..
The only experience I have with 60" F series is when I ordered 60F5000 from the factory before any info or marketing is available for it. I got the first batch fresh from the oven, but when the delivery guys arrived and I saw "1080p vertical" on the box, I knew right then that it's a pentile. Told them to take it back without even opening the box..
I'm using Samsung Galaxy Note with pentile screen, I can also see slight text blur from the 5" screen.

Regarding the buzzing, I actually exchanged 63C8000 for 64D8000 because of the loud buzzing.. The 64D8000 is noticeably quieter.. But I can still hear it faintly when the screen is full white.. I'm sitting 2.5 meters (~8 feet) away from the tv.
Even my Panasonic 65VT50 buzzes when the screen is full white.. But faintly..
Again, it's better for you to test it in person.. For me, I have no problem with the faint buzzes cool.gif
Oh, a tip, don't put the tv back against a solid wall, it'll increase the buzzing volume..

my PN51F5500 Is not a pentile display what i have read only to 60" is the 51" and the 64" are not pentile
post #99 of 696
I have the 60 inch F5500, and I dont notice any picture issues with the Pentile display. Mind you i'm not sitting 1 foot away from it, im about 5 feet off to an angle one one seat and about 12 feet straight back on another. The picture looks good to me. The only issue ive had to far is the brightness/dimming issue on Hockey, other then that, I would have never noticed pentile vs. non-pentile if I didnt hear people talking about it on these forums.

And my TV doesnt make any buzzing noises (yet) and I have mine wall mounted. Its been quiet so far, even when turning it on there is no clicking sounds or anything, just smooth. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I also saw some momentary dimming at first with this display. Then I started turning off features, and it did go away. I am not sure which of these are responsible, but go to advanced settings (in picture), and turn off: motion lighting, dynamic contrast and black tone.

That update fixed the issue on the 8500 so im assuming it should have
post #104 of 696
You updated the TV using the software for the 8500? I don't see any update release for the 5500 other than 1102.1. I guess it was worth a shot if so, I would have tried the same thing.
no there is a update released today i guess 1103
post #106 of 696
like I said it did F-all to fix anything, i was just assuming that it was released to fix the problem we are all having with the hockey, because they did the same thing with the 8500 and apparently it worked
post #107 of 696
I hear ya, thanks for letting us know, I just installed it. I dont have any hockey so I can't tell yet, but from what you are saying it didnt fix the issue so I am not too confident in me having any luck either. I wonder what the update even fixed since that really was the only issue with picture quality. I'll keep you posted when a hockey game comes on.
I'm currently updating to 1103....have hockey game on to check if still popping... Will post back with info soon... Just finished updating, threw on playoffs...... Still happening alittle, but barely noticeable now, Atleast for this game (nyr-bos) I'm happy so far smile.gif

Mine is still popping too. Doesnt seem to be as frequent, but it is the same thing, so im pretty disappointed to say the least. Maybe the update helped some, id have to sit down and watch and entire game, but yea even one pop is not acceptable

I find the TSN feed to not be as bad as the CBC feed (Canada) so watching the Pens and Sens tomorrow will be a better indication I think.
So I don't watch hockey at all. Having said that, what are the black levels like on this set compared to other plasmas like the ST60 or even the GT50 and last years E7x series?
For anyone interested, here are my calibration settings using the DIsney WOW disk on the standard picture mode. I find this mode better, and not as washed out as the movie mode, so I am sticking with these settings for movies anyway as I find them the most accurate for my eyes. Transformers in blu ray looks stunning. Calibration was done at night, in a totally black room

Picture mode : standard
Cell light: 20
Contrast: 100
Brightness: 45
Sharpness : 0
Color: 43
Tint: G50/ R50
Picture Size: Screen fit

Dynamic Contrast: Medium
Black Tone: Off
Flesh Tone: 0
RGB mode: off
Color Space: Native
White Balance: All 25
Color tone: standard
Digital clean view: off
MPEG noise filer: auto
Film mode: cinema smooth
Black optimizer: auto

Feel free to comment if you have any recommendations or changes.

Cheers.

Have you tried turning off black optimizer and dynamic contrast? I believe these contribute to the dimming issue.
Any way to unlock 10 point white balance and/or 6 axis color management? I have the 51d6500, I wanted the 60F5500, but not having these options is a deal breaker for me.

Of course the 8500 have them, but much too expensive for my taste.

I know with some older set, you could change the identifier of the TV (like from d550 to d7000 for example) and it would unlock what I want.

Any experimented user want to try and report back?

I would love to help you make a Decision i have the 51F5500 i'm very pleased with it blacks color and clearity are great i would assume the ST60 could be a little better and it should be but i'm not convinced that it's $500 better and at that price it should be better. But if money was not an issue i'd go 600 more then the 50st60 and get the 51F8500 all day

This hockey flickering is driving me nuts. I just had to fight and fight with Samsung until an email to the executive HQ and they replaced my 2.5 yr old 58" plasma for the purple splotches/banding issue. Now I've had this a week and the hockey is terrible. Anyone? I've tried all recommended fixes here and plan to call tomorrow.
Well, they said they'd elevate it and get back to me in 24-48 hrs. He said he understood what I told him about the reports that a firmware fix apparently took care of the problem on the 8500s.
