just be sure you use HDMI 1.4a in and out. high speed ethernet HDMI you own may not work.

Hi!

It seems there is a huge issue with my SONY. Not a failure but something that keeps bothering me.

Here is my Home-cinema system

PS3/ Xbox 360
cystal audio speakers -check link
crystal audio Subwoofer (x2) http://www.crystalaudiovideo.com/ProductDetails/TX-12SUB-Subwoofer.aspx
Samsung 65 tv led

My previous model was an onkyo 876 2008 model that was THX certfied.

for one month now i have the new sony model . I had issues with Bass. Although i have 2 subwoofers, i felt like the bass was coming out of the satelite speakers.

I tried different configurations but to no avail. The woofer seems like it is not ACTIVE. When in DTS i can feel the woofer working and it is packing a punch.

In dolby digital (Pl II movie/music) there is no woofer working.

When i go to settings to TEST TONE the woofer it works perfectly.

Why is there no sound coming from my woofer?

I am experiencing this same issue. Had the receiver about a week and love everything else.  Anyone figure this issue out yet?

What problems are those?

I've had mine about a week but they were powering my old speakers. I just got my NHT Absolute 5.1T set in today and this rig is singing. I've loved the UI and feature set but now hearing it power some decent gear is making me grin from ear to ear.

Any tips/tricks/must know info, anyone?

Man.. Its really coming down to crunch time for me, as this Saturday Ill be taking the 2 hour trip down to costco to pick up my new 70" M series, and really want to pick up a receiver when Im down there... I have a $150 GC for Best buy, which would be great since there are a few magnolia stores down there as well.. But my interest for the DN-840 has me a little worried as of late... Lots of people with HDMI issues amongst other things, and alot of upset/frustrated customers, and it seems Sonys CS isn't the greatest.. I may still get the 840 for the features, since I will have 14 days with it, but could you guys list what problems you are actually having? I see alot of issues, but am not understanding exactly what they are...
Everyone I talk to or issue I see, Seems to tell me its a handshake issue... Is there something that is just missed by everyone? Very doubtful... Alot of smart Tech ppl on alot of different forums are having this issue... I might buy it to see if the issue applies to me, and if it does, I will swap it for a Denon X1000 or E300.. I would miss the Bluetooth but at the expense of stress it wouldn't matter...

Only thing that bothers me is that best buys return policy is 14 days, and some members have seen the issue START after 2 weeks...

just love the sony avr dn1040.
so far i have found a small issue that could be fix with a new firmware, sony support if you are listening...
there are two hdmi out that typically output audio as well but not when airplay is use.
if you want to listen to airplay from outbput b in another room it is not working.
in my use case i want to get the sound of airplay out to my hearphone sony 7500 that process the 7.1 channel. both hdmi out have the same issue with airplay, the sound is not passed out to the hdmi out. when the sound come from other sources as for example any hdmi input, the sound as well as the video is passed to thoses output.

anyone have a solution for this?

How do I know if I am running DTS hdma? I have the 840 and it does not say I'm on HD.. It says Dolby pl movie....
FYI - I returned my 1040 and got the Denon AVR-X2000 instead. Same devices, same cables ... no more HDMI problems. Just sayin' !

I too am surprised by comments here on HDMI handshake issues. I've had my 1040 since August and haven't had a problem. I have it set up via arc to Vizio M-701 TV with components being; x-box 360,PS-3, Direct TV HR-24, and Samsung BDF-7500 blue ray player. I do have ethernet connected directly to the receiver though. (Only thing on wifi is the PS-3) and the only "new" HDMI cable is the one going from the receiver to the TV.
My experience has been nothing short of exemplary. Sound levels are great with plenty of headroom. (7.1 Paradigm Millenia one's with Seismic 110 sub) family room size is 24' x 22', with fast switching between inputs, great GUI, and quiet operation. BT, Airplay, and DLNA with zero issues.
One issue i DO have (and i consider this minor, but albeit a little weird) is when i go to turn off the amp for the evening, my PS-3 will be turned on and running when i get up in the morning. I know it was off when this was performed. (red stand-by led only) And i'll just say this is not an everyday occurrence, just happens every so-often, not all the time. Other than that, it's been a great receiver for the price.
Anyone with these handshake issues i'd strongly recommend contacting Sony or the purchasing vendor ASAP as this is simply not normal.
-Good Luck

I've had my dn840 for only a few days. I do like it and the BT and airplay work great. No handshake issues here whatsoever. Setup was very quick and easy, as soon as I turned it on for the first time, it let me know there was an update available, and that went smooth too, taking about 20 minutes.

The denon x2000 on A4L for $30 more does have me tempted tho....

What I have connected.

Wii U

Are there any resources that go into real depth into each of the DN1040's modes and how they affect the processing and ideal scenarios for each?
Hi all,

I have Windows 8 on my laptop and noticed a "STR-DN840 CA9978" icon in the Network section of the Explorer.
There is an empty "Music Services" under.
Anyone knows what it is for ?

It looks like Sony doesn't care, still no fixes for the HDMI problems. Your fault for buying a Sony I guess

Sorry I had edit my double post,, I'm so disappointed with my STR-DN1040's HDMI issues. I wonder if the PS4 is going to have the same HDMI issues? Are you going to need a Sony Bravia TV in order for your PS4 to work? Come on really Sony?

at the bottom of the page where 'forums nav' are try the "Surround music formats" or "audio theory set up and chat."
one of these groups might be able to help. I had no idea what NEO6 was until I started browsing the posts there.

simplest thing might be put each into the search window......

Hi, I just bought this device and would like to know how I can make the initial setup without modern HDMI-capable TV/monitor?

I still have a good ole' CRT but I bought this to prepare myself to UHDTV times. Got it cheap, 399 euros. I will probably buy the UHDTV set next year but until then I would like to enjoy the streaming capabilities in music listening.

However, after I made all connections I found that the instructions want me to do an "Easy setup" via TV. Can I skip this and do the configuration using the device's LCD display? Or can I use an app with Android/iPad device to configure it? If there's absolutely no way of using this without TV, I may have to start moving my 27" computer monitor to living room. That would be highly inconvenient though. Hope you can help me to find a more simple solution!

Hello, how does the 1040 compare to the Yamaha rx-a730? I am on the fence.

Also the Denon x2000

Thx

Just bought the 1040 receiver today because of great reviews and because i needed more HDMI inputs for my new systems and for splitting my video between my projector and 3DTV. Anyways I hooked everything up and man does it sound awesome over my old Onkyo 605. The biggest thing that stood out right away was the power and sound from my subwoofers. Punchier and not so muddy sounding, but i have a problem.

My 7.2 speaker setup is done and all works great, but when i shut the receiver off my subs still rumble loudly away into the darkness. Anyone have an idea why this is happening and what a possible solution could be (Velodyne DPS-12 and CHT-8 in use)

Hey guys.

So i was pretty much sure i was going to buy this Sony DN1040, but after reviewing this thread and the one on Sony Support forums, it seems like there is alot of problems with HDCP? I know that all the people who are satisfied usually dont come to the forums and share their good experience. But do any of you, who have had problems, got em' fixed? By either getting a replacement or a software fix?

Thanks.

when you turn the receiver off do you do it manually or does your TV set turn it to standby?

I manually turn the receiver off. My TV and/or my Epson 8350 will be off too but the sub still rumbles. The problem stops a few seconds after it is powered back on, and on any setting whether it has a connection to it or not for any of my devices

It is pretty much the same connection I had with my Onkyo 605. Same speaker cables, HDMI cables and sub connection minus a Y splitter I was using to get the 2 subs working at the same time. I tried adding the splitter back in to see if it would fix it, and sort of made it quieter but still present

Any one else have this problem.
Going to phone sony if continues and they can have it back!

I just installed my 1040 yesterday, and am having the same issue. Whether on my iPhone or my wife's MacBook, the airplay works good for about a minute, then starts to skip.

I'm pulling my hair out with this one guys...  can somebody please explain to me why when accessing my HD via the home network via its menu interface, although I can see the file tree and access the various .mp3, FLAC files, nothing happens when I select any of them. I've set the auto permission to auto access but the various files appear in the menu with a ? against them. When I try and access the unit using the Sony AudioRemote iPhone app to access the same files, it simply says "cannot play music"... any help appreciated!!!!

Many thanks in advance,
Pete

Just to add to the positive: I have zero problems with HDCP or audio on the Sony. I replaced a Pioneer that had problems picking up audio channels and HDCP issues.

I might have jinxed myself.

Last night my SatTV HDMI input just quit working. Just flashes red and blue.

I've tried different cables and different components..

Things to try- If you haven't

1. Connect HDMI from Sat box direct to TV hDMI ( Also ) Try Different HDMI tv Ports if that is a option
2. If that works - Call Sony for repair

Yep, already tried. Pretty sure that port is just dead...
