Soundbar on the fireplace mantle - Recommended...or a NO-NO?

Thread Starter
Just purchased a Bose SR1 soundbar which is still in the box. My TV is going over my fireplace (yes, I know some of you HATE their TV higher than eye-level, but it doesn't bother me...and mounting over the fireplace is ergonomically advantageous in my situation) and I want to mount the TV as close (low) to the mantle as possible. I had planned to let the soundbar simply sit on the mantle directly below the TV, but I didn't know if there were any drawbacks (increased vibration, etc) in doing so. I do plan to use a thin layer of Neoprene foam between the bottom of the soundbar and mantle surface.

The reason I ask is, if it is NOT recommended to let the soundbar sit on the mantle, I will need to mount the TV higher than planned to allow room for the soundbar to be wall-mounted underneath. This will essentially double the height profile of the SR1, as the orientation changes with wall-mounting (speakers now face forward rather than up). I certainly dont want to discover that I should have wall-mounted the sounbar AFTER I've already mounted the TV too low to allow room for the SR1 on the wall.

Any advice is greatly appreciated...ESPECIALLY from those of you who have experience with the Bose SR1.

Thanks

Place the Sound bar on the mantle, run the AdaptIQ and enjoy. Forget the foam under the bar.

I find myself in the same situation. Older home, not many options for TV placement, other than the center of the wall where the fireplace sits... Even worse, my fireplace has a seat on the bottom, so isn't even floor level. Major bummer!

To keep the TV as low as possible, my thought is to mount my soundbar INTO the mantle and incorporate it into the design. To eliminate the black box in the middle of the white mantle, I plan on constructing a frame with white speaker fabric over it to insert into the space. I haven't talked to anyone about the details of my idea to see if I'm heading in the wrong direction, but I'm curious as to how your configuration turned out. I think the only potential issue in my scenario is ventilation of the soundbar, but maybe some holes drilled in the back of the "shelf" would do the trick and would be discrete.

I realize this response is much later than your initial post and I'm not familiar with the Bose SR1, but if you've procrastinated long enough, maybe it sparks a thought... smile.gif
