I only need two IR commands... are there simple options?

Hi folks,

I recently moved up to a 55" LG LED TV and an Onkyo HTiB.

It's my first HT audio system and frankly has been pretty messy in terms of remote controls. Ultimately though, I have gotten it to where we only need the remotes for our two our A/V sources (a cable DVR, and a Sony Blu-Ray which also streams internet) - except for just two other commands that we need.
  1. We need our TV's remote only to turn on the CEC (LG calls it SimpLink) control of volume, because the LG TV forgets this setting every single time we turn it off.
  2. We need our Onkyo HTiB's remote only to tell it to change the input to the Cable DVR. (The Sony is smart enough to switch the Onkyo to it when it turns on, but the cable DVR is not.)

We do both of these things about twice a day, depending. Otherwise, we wouldn't hardly ever need the remotes for the TV or the HTiB.

Is there some sort of uber-simple way to e.g. buy a really cheap device we can program ourselves somehow?

Also it's my understanding that a "learning remote" can handle it, but I'd hate to pay a bunch of money just for two functions. Then spend a lot of time getting it to work. Compared to the extra seconds to pick up the extra remotes for a year, and I've practically already taken more time just writing this message.

Ultimately, the solution needs to be weighed versus the fact that we already have a pretty easy thing right now - we already have the extra two remotes (which we mainly need for one button each, lol).

So Yet Another Remote probably has to really shine in both cheapness and ease of use, to overall be better than what we have now. (Two remote to deal with - but they're both here, free, and working, as we speak.)

I may have answered my own question already, but I don't know AVS very well... maybe there are funky or better solutions I know nothing about.

Thanks if you can shed any light!

Mike

Is THIS cheap enough for you? It does learning, macros and will control every function of every device you have. If you decide to spend a little more later, you can program it from your computer with an optional cable and add even more functionality.

However, for simplicity, I recommend you skip turning on CEC every time and just use the volume punch thru feature of the linked remote. The macro (or command if you prefer) for changing the input is very easy to program. Either learning or codes will accomplish the same thing.
