AVS Can't-Wait Blu-ray Releases 5/13/13

This week's "Can't-Wait" Blu-ray releases have no release date. They are simply movies that I can't wait to be announced on Blu-ray.

Aladdin

First on the list is Aladdin. This animated Disney classic has remained a favorite with exceptional musical performances and great comedy. Looking at this future release on a technical level, if the transfer is a success, it will be eye candy for any videophile. Aladdin was one of the first Disney films to use some CGI effects, and colors really popped on the big screen. The score features wonderful orchestral performances that will excite both your ears and your speakers.

True Lies

True Lies, where art thou? This has been one of the go-to DVD demo discs for AVSers for many years. Although many newer films have better original elements—such as CGI and 4K masters—this one remains a true action classic worthy of Blu-ray. This most-anticipated release is rumored to be released sometime in 2014. I wonder if James Cameron is working on making a 3D version of True Lies? We shall see next year right in time for the film's 20th anniversary.

The Abyss

Another James Cameron film rumored to be released at the same time as True Lies is The Abyss. I can't say enough good things about this film, and I'm still amazed that it was made way back in 1989. The movie offers some visually breathtaking scenes, especially in the dark depths of the abyss. I assume it's going to get the same treatment as True Lies. Maybe a 3D version? If so, it will be nothing short of spectacular, especially if Cameron is working on it. Funny enough, it would also make sense for release next year, as that will be its 25 year anniversary.

Will these be on your next list of pre-orders?

Many years ago, when I purchased my LaserDisc Player, I spent probably $100 on the Abyss. At the time, LaserDisc was the only way to get the extended version. It really is a great movie.

This would be great on Blu-Ray.

I've been dieing to get the Abyss. The DVD version was a let down.

I am anxiously awaiting for the Blu-Ray release of The Abyss and True Lies, and also Strange Days.

I also bought that $100 Special Edition Laser Disc of The Abyss, and the a couple years later bought it again for $60 to get the Dolby AC3 version. Though I rarely use it, I still have my Pioneer CLD-D704 Laser Disc player as well as the Pioneer RFD-1 AC3 decoder.

Oh how times have changed!!

I still get stuck watching True Lies on DVD. The movie is great, I just can't wait until they release both next year.

I just ordered Aladdin yesterday. Should be here next week. Amazon UK, official release and region free. Wait no longer.

I can't wait for The Abyss. I saw it in the theater and loved it. The directors cut(I assume the BR will have it) was even better. True Lies will be a buy as well.

you sound like me! biggrin.gif I still have mine, too. you know, I didn't know there was an AC-3 LD of Abyss. I also have the $100 long version laserdisc in 2.35 AR & Dolby Surround & the theatrical version LD with cropped 1.85 AR & the non-anamorphic DVD.

and I will buy it again with no hesitation when it comes out in Blu. one of my favorite movies.

You forgot The Keep, Vinny! wink.gif

But yeah, those are good ones too. Wouldn't mind seein a nice transfer of The Abyss in HD.

I know it's a longshot, but still waiting for "Thirteen Days" to be released on Blu-Ray.

Hahaha... I didn't forget, I just couldn't find a reasonable Blu-ray cover image. Plus there wasn't any talk of this movie YET....Still on the lookout though. Looking forward to even some rumours. biggrin.gif

+1 on that one. That one also has no rumoured released date, but I am keeping a close eye wink.gif

I have the LD of the Abyss as well, the AC3 version. Sound was spectacular. When the DVD came out, it seemed like a cheap copy in comparison. Definitely will buy the Blu Ray, can't handle the current non-anamorphic DVD.

Do you remember in The Abyss Extended Version LaserDisc how the added scenes would jump just a little. The disc said this was due to the loss of one frame from the cutting room. When they spliced it back together, it was missing those one frame connections.

I wonder if this would be fixed for a Blu-Ray version?

So is the story that they just lost the original masters of the Abyss? Gotta imagine they would have released it by now if there wasn't some big fly in the ointment confused.gif

I thought rumor on True Lies was that Cameron is no longer a fan of the film and he was not interested in any new releases of it on new formats (BR and even iTunes). Which if true is disappointing because I love the film. I thought I read somewhere that Cameron didn't want to perpetuate Muslin terrorists as bad guys post 9/11 so he won't revisit or approve of the film's needed updates. I'm forced to watch a DVR'd HD version from Encore or something like that.

The Abyss is one of my all time favorites. Until the Directors Cut, the movie made no sense to me. I had it on Laser disc first and now DVD. The Bluray should be stunning!!

hdnetmovies.com will be playing True Lies starting june 1, 2013.

enjoy.

Purely hypothetical, mind you: http://i.imgur.com/4Vyc9.png

...But dang! I would so buy that!! biggrin.gif Maybe the folks at Scream Factory or Twilight Time could help us fans out on this one.

There sure are lots of new releases for a format that is supposed to be dying biggrin.gif
It's good to see these new releases.

Where do I sign up for The Abyss on Blu? I want a FULL restoration with the film elements scanned at a minimum of 4K. I would pay $40 for discs that include Theatrical, SE, and/or DC with remastered 7.1 HDMA.

Ah yes, the Abyss. Definitely at the top of my blue ray wish list as well as my puzzlement list for why it wasn't out a long time ago. And, you hint/ wish/ suggest/ hope in 3d. Oh, be still my beating heart. biggrin.gif

I want a DECENT Terminator 2 Blu ray, with a NEW transfer that isn't from 2006! I really wish Cameron would do a remaster, and include the Universal studios 3D ride, since 3D is now widely available to the public. It's like Terminator 2.5, the most expensive movie per minute ever made, and I hope it will be released one day. Even the Skynet Edition of T2 is a very weak Blu ray, that film needs an update, especially considering it came out on a new DVD edition every year for a while there.

I agree the blu ray version could be better. I just bought this on amazon for 5 bucks and still a deal.

You know I haven't owned a 3D panel yet but I love the Terminator movies so much that if they ever came out in 3D I would break down biggrin.gif
