GPT (GUID Partition Table) is the secret sauce.
Since the beginning of the PC, partitions were defined by the "master boot record" (MBR). But it had a 2 terabyte limit, and GPT was needed to go past that barrier.
A device that has GPT support can handle any size partitions. A device without GPT is limited to 2 terabyte partitions.
