I just bought an 828 to replace my still working, but outdated 604. Besides the 9.2 pre-outs, I don't see anything of much importance being lost with the 828 vs the 818. I don't seriously think that anyone actually notices the missing 5W, but they probably noticed the built in wifi and bluetooth that was added.
People seem to be making a big deal out of the mult32 audyssey stuff being downgraded, but I suspect most people tweak their systems anyway after running the setup. How many times do you set your system up anyway?
After doing some reading, I see that a good many purists turn their audyssey completely off, so.... I just don't see it as a big deal personally since I don't hesitate to tweak my calibration after setup.
My ancient 604 has pre-outs AND multi-channel analog audio inputs for DVD, a powered Zone2, plus a slew of s-video inputs. Seems to me like vanishing features are just the way of the world with this stuff no matter who the manufacturer is.
My biggest concern was getting a receiver that would play well with network remote control and that would work with my android toys, the 828 trumped the 818 on that. I also thought it strange that the 818 could upscale to 4k, but couldn't switch another 4k source, the 828 can. HDMI 2 wasn't a big concern to me so I'm not waiting for that, I just want to be able to do the newer dolby digital plus now. OTOH, I don't know if I'll have a 4k display before another 7 years goes by, but I don't want to have to buy another receiver just to be able to switch the signals. That's the boat I'm in right now with 3d, plus my old receiver only has 2 hdmi inputs.
I don't think you got shafted by getting a replacement that is two generations newer than what you had.
My main question is, where is the official owners thread for the 828?Edited by anthony fremont - 11/28/13 at 2:02am
