I am currently trying to decide between the 65X900A and the 65X850A and hoping to pick the set that will provide the better image. This is where my confusion comes in. The 900 is the higher model number so I would think it was the better set and the impressions in this discussion seem to bear that out. However, when I visited the Sony store, everyone there insisted that the 850 provided the superior picture (ex: superior dynamic range, possibly due to the difference in glass vs matte screen) and recommended it over the 900.
Also reading the 850 discussion thread here, there is some talk that the 850 may have better response time. As a gamer that would be a good thing.
So I find myself a bit confused and undecided as to which set to get.
Your thoughts would be appreciated.
You did it like me...you read all 3000+ posts!! Then you forget everything you read, and ask again.
There is a huge difference between these two sets.
In fact, they are totally opposites.
The 900a has a deep, Intense, picture quality, with amazing color rendition. This is greatly achieved because it has a reflective panel.
The 900a has the best 3d and even better 3d simulation.
The 850 has a matte screen, and the image is much less vibrant, and deep.
Imagine two identical sports cars. One is glossy, and one matte. The glossy/shiny one pops out and is a feast for the eyes. The matte one is also aesthetically pleasing.. but somewhat bland. As if it were missing something.
The 850 has active 3d, which in my opinion is not nearly as good as the 900's passive quality.
If you want a gaming screen go with the panasonic. It is much better for gaming than the two Sony's. However if you want and AMAZING picture quality, with unparalleled 3d ...go with the 900 @ 65".
I hear panasonic has some vertical line problem, you may wish to check this out.
Actually, the 850 is the most recent tv sony has produced. Also keep in mind that the speakers (which we call elephant ears) on the 900 are really good. No other Tv has a better sound.
If you want to game on the Sony 900, that is fine, but if you set your card to maximum resolution at 4k you will get some lag.
I suggest turning the card down to medium or high, instead of ultimate. I have a Titan, and on ultimate, there is some lag.
Even on 1080, your games will look much better than on any pc screen. I have Asus 144hz pc screens especially for gaming. The sony gives a much better graphic image. Couple this image perfection with the 65" of real estate, and you will be blown away (before you even see the enemy!).
If you are in the USA, I suggest you go to Hhgregg, where they have both these tv's side by side. I would also bring your own content on a USB stick, so you can compare both.
