2nd guessing my purchase.

Right now my current AVR is a Sony ES1000 in 2001. I was out and decided i wanted to buy something finally to take advantage of the new sound formats.

So i picked up a Onkyo TXNR717 at bestbuy today for $536 out the door on a whim.
Now i get it home and start doing reviews and see alot of people like the denon 1913 better, and this is what is starting to make me rethink my purchase.
I was at the store and did see the denon but they looked cheap as heck, saw it was made in china so i started to look at other avrs.

Before i go through the process of swapping out. Is denon going to be that much better then the onkyo?
Sound quality and reliably are my 2 top concerns.
Unit would be powering JBL S312/8/SC

Any recommendations in the $500 or less range?

I am not a big fan of the new Denon AVR's. Sound quality is fairly good, but I feel you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere. Have you looked into the pioneer vsx-823? I work for an electronics retailer and I've had the chance to listen to these two side by side with some Polk Tsi 300's. I prefer the pioneernto the denon

I would just give yourself some time to get used to the Onkyo. I have a Denon 1913 and think it sounds great.. however next season I was going to look at the new Onkyo as it has a bit more power ( the new version of the 818 ) .. Really it's just a toss up I think. Onkyo makes a great product, and really, so does Denon. Two and one half dozen of the other. I have heard that Denon has superior customer service, but again, that might just be a random opinion I've read.

One drawback of the NR717 is that it only uses Audyssey 2EQ with does not EQ the subwoofer. Last years NR709 uses Audyssey MultEQ XT which is much better than 2EQ.

I would take last years NR709 or NR809 over the NR717.

The Denon 2113 or 2313 would be more in the same price range as the NR717. You can get the Denon 1913 for $399.

Honestly,
with past experience with things made in china they don't last and are cheaply made.

I did hook the unit up last night and watched 2012 was a nice difference from my old ES1000. I have yet to use the microphone set up. Just hooked it up and went on my way. I iwll give it a few days see what i think.
But if there is something better out there within the same price range i am all ears.

The receivers will be made to the specs of the manufacturer whether it be China or Malaysia. They both use cheap labor though.

FYI, Onkyo receivers over the past 5 years have been notorious for HDMI board failures and those units are not made in China.

You should plug in the microphone and run Audyssey. Your system should sound even better after that.

**Update**
I am loving the sound this thing puts out. It is a toss up for either pure direct or direct mode for the sound field i use.
Now i have noticed 3-4 very quick video( about half a second) drop outs with almost every movie i have watched so far.

I have been looking around and have found a denon avr2312CI for $480. If i trade these out am i going to notice a difference in sound quality?
The one thing i do like with the onkyo is i can play music from my android through my home network since it is on wifi mode at home. I can not find any hard evidence that the 2313 will do the same.
