How does the new Denon AVR-E400 compare to Denon 2809CI?

Thread Starter
I currently have the Denon 2809CI and received the AVR-E400 as a sort of gift. I am curious what's better/worse with the AVR-E400 upgrade?

This is for my bedroom TV so I have a simple 2+1 audio setup with 2 Axiom floor speakers and a HSU STF-2 subwoofer. It looks like the AVR-E400 has a little less power; would I notice? Also looks like the AVR-E400 has more net enabled features like Apple Airplay, plus the latest HDMI standard. The AVR-E400 is about half the cost what I paid for the 2809CI. I have a simple 42" plasma TV setup (no 3D etc.), but I do have an iPhone and I like to mess with the Internet features of devices..

If you want the network features then the E400 would be fine for your needs.

of course you can get one of last years models for even less like the 1613, 1913, 1713 or 2313 for less than the current price of the E400.

The AVR-1913 is what the E400 replaced.

They all have airplay and internet streaming features such as Pandora, etc.

I have a Denon AVR-989 (same as 2809) and 1613.

You lose power, the E400 is a lower level model that is smaller and lighter and doesn't have the build quality of your 2809CI... but for a 2.1 setup in a bedroom that's basically irrelevant.

You also lose MultEQ XT, as the E400 only has basic MultEQ. So you may notice some loss of fidelity. For your needs something like the 1713 (or its X1000 replacement) would have been a better choice as it maintains XT but also brings the modern goodies like networking and GUI. It is only 5.1 but you are only running 2.1 so no worries there.

What you gain is a lot of modern features -- network access, streaming audio, iPhone app control, on-screen GUI, etc.
