I have also been shopping for surge protection. I think you have to make some basic decisions before you even start shopping. For one, are you going with MOV based protection, or series-mode? MOV may degrade after some small surges, leaving you unsure if you are completely protected. Also, MOV are disposable. But this keeps them inexpensive. Series-mode are more accurate protection and last forever = more expensive.
But also, are you only protecting from a surge or do you need what I call tighter protection. Most surge projectors don't shut off the power until a surge reaches 330V, which is enough to really cause some damage. Tighter protection is a power management system that shuts off power when it exceeds some small % away from 120V, say down to 95V and up to 133V.
Then there is the whole house surge protector option.
Lots of choices! I'm still not sure which way I'm going.
