Well, my point is, that a big part of it is consumers expectations going in. I honestly think both Microsoft and Sony should publicly announce that the XB1 and PS4 will be the last consoles they release with a disk drive. They need to start setting up consumer expectations now, so in another 5 or 6 years, there won't be a huge uproar, because everybody has already mentally prepared for it. If in February when Sony first announced the PS4, if they showed a picture of it, and it had no disk drive at all, then I think things could have been very different.
Sure, there would still have been a bit of an uproar about it, but it would have faded away much quicker. These big manufacturers need to cut the embillical cord that is the disk drive.
Why don't people complain about being able to "trade in" or resale Angry Birds ? Nobody complains about it, because there is this built in expectation that you don't really own your games. Everybody is just leasing and renting their games under specific terms which are subject to change. You'd think people would complain about it, but there isn't any physical media to sell or trade, so it just bypasses the whole argument.
As for the retailers, let them sell the download codes at a slight discount or something. The retailers can still sell controllers and charging stations and hdmi cables, etc, etc.
