Official Samsung PNxxF8500 Owners Thread (No Street Price Talk) - Page 70

Went back into my Dealer I bought my PN64F8500 from to do a 30 Day Price Guarantee. Even the demo is gone off the wall, and no more coming in! Everyone in my area buying the 60", and not the 64". Mine had been collecting dust in the warehouse - Aug 2013 Build - by the sounds of members purchasing the Oct 2013, glad I got one of the older ones. Sounds like Samsung has cheapened something to produce these newer units?

How many problems have you seen about the Oct 2013 build?  Ive only seen two people talking about it, are there more?   I doubt they changed something in the hardware from August to October...but who knows.

I nave a PN60F8500 arriving next week and was wondering if the 3D glasses are IR or Bluetooth? I have six pairs of Xpand 103's, which are universal IR and was wondering if there will be a way to utilize those with this set...

Hello Everyone

So finally after returning Sony 60" R550A 3 times, I have bought and decided to keep Samsung 60" F8500 Plasma TV. As soon as I have hooked up, I have updated Camera Firmware and TV firmware which was last night showing after the upgrade 1114. I have noticed there were some functions greyed out such as "Advanced Settings" . When I had reset the TV to default Factory settings using PIN Code 0000 all those features they lid up except ZOOM features.

I have a quick question, I tried to even find out in this blog however I couldn't how can I check System Up time and Build date? and Is there a small Joystick behind the TV lower left corner side, functions as remote control?

Also I have noticed there is a some buzz sound all the time which I really don't care because I can't hear if the volume is up, however If i turn off the volume that's the only time I hear it.

If I could go back in time I would buy the 60" instead of the 64". It's noticeably brighter and imo a near perfect picture. The 64" is bright, don't get me wrong, much more so than the Panny's, but the 60" is even brighter still & the wife loves sunlight. Believe it or not, I watch tv all the time with all the shades & blinds wide open with actual direct sunlight hitting the screen & somehow the picture still looks good (on Standard). It's really impressive! But b/c I do this so much, I'd go for the 60" & recommend it over the 64". It almost has the eye searing brightness of the 50" at almost the size of the 64. It's the one to get imho.

So, shpankey, you are very happy with your F8500?

I am trading in my ZT60 of a 64" model.

Yes, I am ecstatic with it. I typically have buyers remorse and end up wishing I could of had something else. It's just the way I am. In most cases on large purchases, I end up having to make compromises due to cost and never really get what I want for whatever reason. In this case, I had planned for many months to get the ZT60 and knowing my situation, reading reviews and the ultimate, comparing them side by side, at the very last moment I switched to the Samsung due to the light issues I mentioned above. I really couldn't be happier. The only thing is, my typical buyers remorse still kicks in, but in this case, it's only in that I have a VERY small niggle in that I would have chose the 60" due to it having an even brighter picture. But believe me when I say this, the 64" is very bright and can take ANY light I throw at it. It's pretty damn impressive actually. I'm used to the picture washing out and fading severely in these scenarios and this thing handles light like it's nothing. It suffers, like all tv's, but not like typical plasmas and certainly not like my others in the house (older plasmas) which are near unwatchable. This is not only watchable, but still looks damn good and can still be somewhat impressive, even in a fully lit room. Not as much as a dark room obviously, but the fact that it still looks good is all that matters to me.

I'm very rarely perfectly content with a tv, but am so happy to say I truly am with this 8500. They really hit a homerun and addressed THE biggest issue existing for the display technology when they was able to get it to display this bright and whatever voodoo they use (filters, etc) to dispense of light in the room. I would not trade this tv for any other plasma other than the 60" of the same making and until OLED is in my price range. I highly recommend you try one yourself, I think if a bright "led like" image suits you, or you like to have lights on or sunlight, this is your tv. If you live in a batcave, mancave, movie theater room, there are some good competing options, but I would still chose this tv, as it's not slouch in black levels and you never know what you may do with this tv in the future... you may want it in a kids room where light once again becomes a concern. So it is a more logical long term solution that won't require any qualifiers such as "zero to no light" areas.

Can any owners comment on the reported floating blacks on this set? How bad is it? Im debating between the 64F8500 and the 65F8000

I haven't noticed any floating blacks except with Cinema Smooth off in 3D, but that was before firmware updates were applied (haven't tried since then).

I turn on Cinema Smooth when watching Blu-rays, though.

Great TV, but I noticed something the other day when I was watching Secret World of Arietty (a cartoon). During a vertical pan, I noticed that the top half of the screen was ever so slightly darker than the bottom half. It's only noticeable in certain scenes of certain cartoons, or whenever I drag a white Chrome window around the screen and look closely. Exactly half of the screen is just a tad darker. The TV still has less than 100 hours on it.

Was wondering if any other F8500 owners noticed this?

Thanks a million for letting me know. Here's another question, How do you find the blacks with super dark content? Do the wide screen bars blend in with a dark room even with super dark scenes?

And to any VT60 owners that switched to a F8500, how did you find to brightness in 3d?

Is 2 very faint bands that are visible on panning shots of skies..etc..normal for the 64 inch version? Ive had mine for almost 2 months now, and just wondering if there are others with the banding issue?

how to check System up time? Could not find this option. Oh I bought this TV last week and its build date is July 2013 and currently I am running 1114 version, Not too sure if already its been updated to 1115 last night as I have set the settings to download and update it automatically.

David has kindly asked my to pass this on. If you're like me, and not liking the spindly 3D Glasses that Samsung provides, and find the intruding side light being let in, you may want to try a pair of these.:

We offer a £5 discount code to people who "Like" our facebook page and request a voucher via the message button.

If you would like to promote this Facebook Voucher Discount code on the AVS forum this would be appreciated. Recommend customers "Like" our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ThePerfectSignal get a code then place their order, remembering to email me to let me know they are using the code against the purchase. We have a separate website www.3d3.co.uk which deals exclusively with 3D glasses.

Can any of the current owners who also use their TV for gaming tell me what the input lag is like? Is it noticeable?

Thanks.

I'm wondering the same thing.. has a firmware update fixed this issue without having to do the PC input workaround? I had this tv a few month back and thinking of getting it again for my man cave. I have an LED in my living room now and movies look not so great.

Just name the input to the PC. It lowers the lag enough to play a game
post #2093 of 5618
i'm not a hardcore gamer, so take this for what it's worth. I have been playing games since well into the crt days, and my library includes FPS, sports games, Kinect games, driving games, and many others less affected by lag.

f8500 in 'normal' mode. about the worst I've experienced. in fact, the first time I've ever used a displayed and noticed lag without it being pointed out to me. I still don't find most games badly affected, but I think it's a great excuse for why my k/d ratio is always below .2 haha. with Kinect games, I do find it troublesome, and where I notice it the most is when using the cursor on my HTPC. there is a very obvious lag when moving the cursor around, to the point that you have to adjust and get used to it, otherwise you end up missing the file you were trying to click on, haha.

the f8500 in PC or game mode. pretty average in my opinion. it feels like my last plasma, and honestly I never noticed anything between my last plasma and the crt it replaced. all games, and all activities feel normal for me, and the picture quality is still very high. far as I can tell, i'm limited to using standard mode instead of movie, otherwise all the other settings and features I use are available. i'd say I get about 95% as good of image in game mode as I do in the normal mode. and that's good enough to be clearly better than every other display I've seen on the market aside from panny's top 3(st60, vt60, zt60) which becomes more of a debate and preference.

I certainly would not avoid this tv because of input lag. I don't believe the vt or zt to be any faster(compared to the f8500 in game mode), and I know the st60 is actually worse(unless it's got some super secret hack/trick i'm not aware of).

Why did you return it? Was the input lag that bad even with the PC input rename trick?

I was thinking of getting the Sony W900 / W905 as the alternative but I don't think the PQ is as good, however it's still very good and input lag is like 10ms. I only have a few hrs left to decide so any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much for your comments. My two options are this TV or the Sony W900 LED/LCD which has a good PQ and very low input lag of 10ms but the PQ on the F8500 is meant to be better. I am no hardcore gamer but do enjoy playing console games.

What is the difference between game mode and PC mode?

Also do you think future Evolution kits may improve the input lag issue?

Thanks

I know... I was wondering if the lag had been fixed with a firmware update... "enough" with the input workaround isn't really what I want to hear aren't most of the picture adjustments greyed out with PC labeled as an input? Anyone gaming on the ps4?

With an IR remote and the set on, sequentially enter MUTE 7 3 7 ENTER

If it fails to show a "setup" screen in the upper left corner, try again. I sometimes have to key this sequence 4 times to get it to work, but eventually it does.

"MRT" is hours on.

Dismiss the screen by powering off the TV.

There are other ways to do this, but you can brick a very expensive TV and void the warranty by using them. All methods require an IR remote because the silver "touchpad" remote has no numeric buttons.

I'm about to buy this TV wondering if the current owners have Geek Squad or Square Trade as their warranty company? From what I've read Geek squad covers burn ins.. Can this be true? What about square do they cover burn ins and has anyone had to deal with either companies before?

I've used geek squad... they come to your house to fix it.. if they can't fix it you get to swap it for another tv or get a gift card for the amount you paid. Covers burn in, best buy swapped out my old panny that had severe burn in.... basically just gave me 1100 to put toward a new tv. I've never used square trade.

Sorry to be a pain lads but I really need to know if the Evolution Kit has the ability to reduce input lag in future? I only have 1hr left to make up my mind on a Sony W900 or Samsung F8500. If the Evo Kit has the potential to improve input lag in future I think I'll go the F8500.

Would be a great help to get some info on this subject before the next hour.

Cheers
