I have used Avia. I haven't tried Video Essentials, which I have heard is more geared for CRT's. You could get it from amazon.com but it might pay off to visit some other online DVD retailers. These DVD's aren't cheap.

Yes, it definitely did help. Is this a CRT front projector? Those need much more fine tuning than a digital projector.

I got mine (Avia) from Amazon, good service, fast shipping, (no affiliation, blah).
Normally, I point people from over "there" to forums over "here", but this is an exception. The *************** (do the www and the dot com thing), has an entire forum dedicated to Avia and VE. I have seen posts that people have gotten it at Best Buy, CC, Frye's, etc. They say it might not be in an obvious spot, like in the regular movies under the letter "A" for example.
Avia or I suppose VE is almost essential for getting a good calibration. I couldn't believe the difference it made for me, after trying to eyeball it. And Avia does have some special sections for "special" display devices, such as lcd's.
Also, there are now at least two versions of Avia, I think you are talking about the "new" one, with the demo/explanation parts. I think the first one was purely business, you had to know which chapters to use, etc.

I think Avia is the better disc choice for an LCD projector. I am going to move this to the Digital Projectors Under $5000 forum. Hopefully some of the experts there can give you advice on the best way to use it with your LCD.

Which one would be good for DLP?

If you don't want to spring for the cash initially for Avia, you can use the THX setup on several DVD's. This setup steps you through properly setting your contrast, brightness, color, tint, etc. It has decent test patterns and is a start. T2:UE and Star Wars both have it I believe.
