However, I'm very disappointed that I can't apply these settings when using the built-in apps. You can only apply these to HDMI 1, HDMI 2 and the Video Inputs.

Am I wrong on this? Do you know?

I heard people saying D-Nice's setting looks better than that. Have you tried it and compared them? I haven't used any setting yet.

Ah I'm not worried about the built-in apps. I checked them out and they are slow as hell. Netflix only streams 720p HD there instead of 1080p if I do it from PS3. And the it's way faster on PS3.

Wow, I was being dense about this. Easy as pie.

The dithering seems to be getting less as I break this thing in with D-Nice's slides. Have you noticed that? I've got probably 80 or so hours on it by now.

D-Nice's settings are next, but they're for the ST60 and we don't have the 'More Detail' adjustments on the W/B and Gamma. Are you just not going to use those?

For reference, I'm talking about these settings:

Glad you guys are liking your set!

I'm sort of rethinking my move not to get a replacement set now.. though honestly my luck with this TV.. first my order was canned by Newegg, then this one arrives with a gouge in it, I think the third I'd open the box it would blow up. Also since these don't appear to actually be refurbished, I wonder about finding a third party warranty.

Although I am sort of tempted to hook it up and see what it's like, Newegg told me CEVA would be contacting me for a pickup, hopefully sooner than later..

Yeah, I didn't copy the settings since I was going to A/B as well. OK, I'll do my settings on HDMI 1, then copy, then test the app, then setup HDMI 2 with different settings, then I should be able to A/B.

Are you not liking the set? Are you thinking of returning it?

If you can still watch Thor, tell me how the dithering is in the opening scene. Mostly I'm not bothered by it, but in scenes like that I think it's way too much noise. Also in the opening black screen of Flight and then some posterization in the out of focus areas of that opening scene. Posterization is definitely there, but not a deal-breaker for me.

Yes, I'm considering a return. Mostly for the buzzing and motion handling, but I need to verify that other TV's are actually better in that area. I was under the impression that it's a non-issue on Plasma, but this one on rtings gets low marks comparable to some LCD's I believe. I'm not gaming yet, but I've seen one poster saying stay away from the tv for gamers because of motion and phosphor trails.

I really don't mind the type of blur that is a bit of resolution lost. It's actually the slower movement that bothers me when it's like a subtle ghosting or judder. Maybe some of this is just seeing things that you normally don't notice because I'm coming for a smaller CRT to a 50" panel, but since others are noticing similar things, I'm not so sure. I'm looking at the Sammy 5300 as an alternative.

The D-Nice settings aren't for this TV. Are people using them on the S60/S64? I'm trying the Fairchild and Cnet settings so far.

Dithering is the same and the TV is broken in. I'm using the Cnet and Fairchild settings. I don't see how the D-Nice settings would work as the TV settings are different and it's a different panel entirely. That's not to say that they can't look good, but they won't come as close to any sort of proper calibration.

I haven't tested gaming yet but I don't have the buzzing issue at least. If I get close to the TV to the back, I can hear minor buzzing sound. But from my viewing position which is about 7ft away, I can't hear anything, especially with speaker sound on.

Wow that's the third serious case of motion blur on this set I've read this week, I had no idea this was even an issue..

I think what you're referring to is phosphor lag.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXtVU_ZQ660

Is it similar to this?

I'm actually in the same boat with my current Vizio, I don't really mind the blur/lost of resolution as much as I do this dark black ghost that sometimes shows up in motion, it's more distracting to me.. and once I saw I've been looking to upgrade since.

It's actually called inverse ghosting on an LCD/LED, where they use overdrive on an LCD to get response time faster.. results in the artifacts.. unfortunately most TVs have no way of turning this off.

To think a Plasma in 2013 would have that issue sort of shocks me, and amazingly I had only seen this issue pop up once I had bought it.. maybe I'm lucky it came scratched..

Depending on if Newegg refunds me by this weekend I'll probably buy an F5300 this week, it doesn't get very much love here but it does have some serious upsides vs the S60. (Brighter, better motion, and potentially less IR issues, though up for debate, generally it seems Samsung handles it better).

It's nothing that bad, but I haven't gamed on it yet. I am concerned about phosphor lag being an issue though because there was another poster with the S64 saying to not get it and go with the Samsung 5300. He was very disappointed because overall it's a great tv and didn't think motion would ever be an issue.

The problem I'm seeing is basically a slight doubling of the image, just like you see on the rtings sites test films, so I assume the issue I'm seeing is the motion resolution issue. It's just that the loss of resolution doesn't really bother me on the high speed stuff. Its more the slight double accompanying any type of panning or even normal speed human movements. I don't know yet if judder will be an issue as I haven't test Blu-Ray yet. People seem more concerned about Judder, but from what I've read at 60hz it's very acceptable on this tv. For me, I think the general motion handling is going to be a bigger issue than judder.

However, I haven't had a chance to really A/B another tv known for smooth motion to see if what I'm seeing is present on all tv's and I'm just seeing normal behavior and am just not used to the size. My friend does have an older Panny ST30 and I have to say I've never seen the issue over his house. His is 42" though, so maybe I just didn't notice. My other friend has a Sammy LED and I've got to say that the poor motion handling I see on his tv is the same effect that I seem to be seeing on mine....his is just more severe. I didn't think this was an issue at all on Plasmas, that's the general mantra, but now I'm seeing others say the same thing. They thought they were safe and ended up disappointed. Even the rtings site ranks this tv low in this category, yet they say motion isn't on issue on plasmas?

I saw that post too, after I ordered it.. he added more comments in my F5350 vs S60 thread in the regular Plasma section... it's a trade off apparently. Better motion or better blacks. I care much more about motion at this point, I'd say nearly 3/4ths of my TV use is going to go to sports and games. The rest is going to largely be casual TV watching and then maybe 10% will be dark room, serious movie watching.. not that black levels don't help everywhere. At the same time I like to have lights on and the lack of an AR filter is a bit troubling.

I'm more and more considering just waiting a month, seeing what Samsung has for the 2014 lineup, and if it's end up going for one of the new ones or maybe a discounted F8500.

Really makes me even more sad the ST60 has such a bad input lag rating, it has great motion, great filter, black quality, brighter than the S60, etc.. and it's right in my wheel house price range, now I'm really not sure what I want to do. Just 20-25ms and it would be perfectly fine for me. Oh well..
Haha, were you guys talking about me? Yes, I would still recommend a Sammy if motion is your biggest priority. My S64 is not too bad. Slow games like Morrowind and GTA play ok. The phosphor lag is dependant on colors by the way, sometimes I see it, other times it's less irritating. FPSs with dark background also plays fine. I even played Sonic with little complaints! The biggest offender for phosphor lag seem to be with racers, like Need For Speed where I would see phosphor trails on cars all the time. Overall, I still feel my S64 has superior motion performance than the LCDs.

Still, that's for 60 FPS games. 30 FPS games are far worse though.. Again, slow games like GTA are tolerable but other games really makes me feel I'm playing on an LCD. Phosphor trails + plasma judder = bad combo. Double images are expected as my previous LG plasma also had them, but the Panny makes them far worse. I now have to build a gaming PC to play most of my console collections at 60fps. I'd rather play the consoles, so that's unfortunate. Scaling's also nasty. Xbox 360 never looked this bad. Even my previous Sony LCD handled 720p PS3 games better, and the PS3 has worse scaling than the 360.

Still, with all that's said, I think this is a keeper though. I am mesmerized with great blacks that I don't want to go back to my LG plasma level. My previous LG plasma had its black tweaked to be closer to the F5300, so I know what the black will be on that set and I would grudgingly trade worse motion for better blacks. Its black is THAT good.

Is it confirmed that the s64 had been discontinued by Panasonic? Are there still some 65 in to be found at random costcos?

I have a 65s60 in a light controlled room and love it. My only concern is if I move to a house with direct sunlight in the future. Still within return window at best buy.

Panasonic's entire lineup is discontinued, and the S64 was hard to find a month or two ago, you'd have to be very lucky to find a set today.

thanks, when I get back home to San Antonio I may swing by and check my local Costco. If they don't have it I will just have to enjoy my awesome new TV #firstworldproblems.

No more at Tustin Costco #1, even the display model got sold, my friend bought the last new one after I texted her.

Newegg is really killing me, they told me on Tuesday that I'd hear back from them as to what to do with this TV and that the refund has been issued. So I'm waiting around daily to hear back and checking my account for a refund.. all this time I'm thinking it's coming in but I actually won't be getting a refund until they get it back which will be ~1-2 weeks depending on how fast the CEVA guy comes to pick it up.

I'm missing some killer deals on TV this week too, the F5300 is $530 at Best Buy and they're doing a $10 coupon per $100 spent if you do in store pickup, so essentially $480 for the TV...

New S64 owner here. Me too I have noticed the image lag. It's not that bad but noticeable on fast moving objects. I wonder if LED TVs are really worse than that? I thought plasma's supposed to have little to no motion lag?

That said, I the PQ of the TV is good, just a bit dim if I tweak it to CNET setting.

Wth some Christmas gifts already bought, I'd be cutting it close on kind of keeping a minimum in my account.. I sent a pretty angry e-mail to Newegg so let's see how they go with that.

At best I'd get my refund like 3 weeks after reporting damage, and that's if they pick it up tomorrow, which is highly doubtful. Ridiculous.

Yeah, that's really tough. So sorry to hear that! Don't you have a bro-in-law that can front you the money? Bro-In-Laws are good for that kind of stuff...oh, and borrowing tools. Yeah.

Haha, nope, but it's no big deal. I figure if they're offering deals like this they'll offer them again by the end of the Christmas season, maybe not quite as good, but we'll see..

Honestly if Newegg continues to shuffle their feet though I might end up threatening to do a charge back. They need to have this thing picked up by Wednesday...

thank you to whom ever posted about a couple tvs at the south loop Chicago Costco, I was able to snag the s64 50 inch display model for $450, no box and I had to purchase a $55 membership
post #381 of 396
So I sent a pretty pointed.. essay of sorts.. to Newegg on I think Sunday night and on Monday without a response they issued a refund to me! So I was able to order the F3500. It was $530 + tax, but Best Buy is doing something for $10 for every $100 you get a coupon/gift card or something plus on top of that it's going to be a bit over $20 in reward points aaaaand I had a $10 reward zone credit already..

So if I consider those coupons I guess in the end it will be $450 before tax eek.gif

Newegg still hasn't told me what to do with this S64!

Though I love my 50 s64, I really want to go bigger.  Has anyone seen the 65s64 at either costco or sams?  Ive called numerous sams in the Chicagoland and Indiana areas with no luck.  If anyone has seen one in Wisconsin or Michigan areas please post, thanks

I was about to spring for a 65ST60, but the cheapest price I could find was around $1850 after cash back rewards.

Tonight, I just purchased a 65s64 for $1185 (shipping was $90...I hate paying for shipping). But with my Discover cashback -$160. Getting it for close to $1000 tax and shipping included. It is a refurbished model from a major retailer. Should I be concerned? Does a refurb still come with a full manufacturer warranty?
Besides a regular Costco here in Hayward (CA) we also have a "Business Costco"
They have been getting quite a selection of "certified" refurbished TV's.

I guess this is one place the returns end up.

Today I saw they added 6 of the 50PS64's.
$529.99

Slowball,
Just posted on the S60 thread but picked up a 65S60 (not S64) at the Clyborn Costco for $900. It was only inbox unit left but still had the display. This was on Sunday. Good luck!

Sears but I was checking every few days.

I went to 3 costcos in Fresno, CA and they did not have the 50 inch but they all had the 65 inch for 1299 still. Really wanted the smaller one for my Bedroom.
