So I'm pretty much between the F7100 and W802A for my new 55-60" tv. I would get the Panny ST60 but the input lag is pretty terrible, which would drive me nuts for videogames.

Can anyone give me some good advice on which TV they prefer between the two? Right now what is keeping me on the fence is that the Sony has excellenct input lag (20ms) versus the Samsung (43ms), but the Samsung I can get in 60" instead of 55". Can anyone with the F7100 comment on its video game performance?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

I have the W802A and am loving it. If i made a list of plus and minuses it would go like this.

Plus:

Passive 3D: Less I strain and no ghosting/crosstalk.

Stellar video processing: The X-reality pro is still some of the best processing this side of Sharp's ELITE for an LED display.

Input lag (16-20ms in game mode).Gaming has been some of the best I have experienced on an LED/LCD. I am not talking about input lag, although that is good as well. I am talking about actual motion performance in game is stellar.

Black levels:For an IPS panel they are pretty great obviously can't compete with Pansonic plasmas, but solid with fantastic shadow detail.

Uniformity:At least my unit only has a faint glow in the lower left and upper right during transition screens, but not during normal viewing. Some of the best edge lit uniformity I have seen.

Minuses:

Black levels:Having owned and NX720 with VA panel I know what can be achieved with the right LCD.

Edge Dimming:Sony's doesn't offer the faux dimming found on the HX720/HX850. Instead offers frame dimming which offers a hardware/software solution that analyses the picture and adjust picture as needed. This of it as more of a very precise Dynamic contrast feature.

Picture Adjustment controls:While Sony offers more presets than you can shake a stick at(Option button on control/Scene Select), but they don't offer a CMS (color management). There seems to be a real heavy "Blue" push on this set that is hard to tweak out. This could be a side effect of the LG panel, because I noticed with my LM7600 as well.

I have tried Samsung displays and have issues with some minor non defeat-able noise cancelling and interpolation. I have noticed noise on the Samsung's that make even HD content through Blu-ray looked compressed and noisy. Samsung uses Vertical Alignment panels which in general offer better Black level and overall contrast than IPS, But are inherently slower response times without overdrive employed. I have tested the 46" F7100 and F8000 at Best Buy with my PS3. I didn't notice the lag as much as I noticed overdrive (color/black) trailing with gaming content. I started with Deadspace which is fantastic stress test for any display and all the dark passageways of the USG Ishimura exhibited black trailing in the shadowy areas. Thinking maybe with the it being locked at 30HZ(fps) maybe the set was over compensating for it, so I tried Rage which is 60HZ(fps). It didn't seem to make a difference either way trailing was apparent in both cases. I noticed little to none with film content, but as a gamer it is distracting.

Well that may have been a little more technical than you wanted, but I hope that helped?

I would go f7100 all the way. Yeah the Sony has a little less input lag, I can tell you that I feel absolutely no input lag on the f7100, game mode looks no different than any other mode, so the image quality is amazing. The samsung has better black levels, and the 3d is full resolution, where as the Sony is 1920 x 540 I believe. I think both offer good uniformity this year , the samsung has a better smart interface. I see absolutely no overdrive, my other gaming tv is a panny ips 37e3, and motion looks the same on this tv as the panny for gaming. Both are great tvs, motion is smooth as silk with new firmware 1104. The input lag on f7100 55 inch is 38ms compared to Sonys 20ms, you will be hard pressed to notice the difference

I was only able to test the 46" versions of the Samsungs. Samsung uses so many manufacturers for their screens the 55" could be a different panel therefore not show the overdrive trailing I saw on the smaller display. Are you familiar with overdrive trailing you can find vids on YouTube showing examples.

Thanks for the input, guys. I'm leaning towards the F7100 so I can get the benefit of the bigger screen due to my viewing distance being somewhat long now (~12 ft), but I'm going to see if at some store they are willing to hook up a PS3/360 to it so I can test a game like COD/Halo/BF3 out. If they can't do that, I could still buy it and test it out at home and return it within the 30 days. If it isn't up to snuff, I'll return it and try out the W802A and just move my couch closer lol.

I'm actually in the same boat. I'm torn between the UN55F7100 and the KDL-55W802A. I've been reading through the owner threads for both TVs, took a look at the input lag thread and also read through the Active vs Passive debate. I wanted to throw out a couple points that I've come across for the UN60F7100 that you seem to be leaning towards. That TV actually uses a Sharp manufactured display...thus the input lag results are a little different. (43ms for the 60" vs. 38ms for the 55") Not a huge difference...but it does put the 60" in the "OKAY" range vs the "GOOD". Also, the design of the TV's frame is thicker on the 60" most likely to account for the difference in the Sharp display vs the Samsung found on the 55" and 65".

Right now I am leaning towards the Sony 55W802A because of the input lag, Passive 3D and video processing. However, I like the look of the Samsung better, and it does seem to produce a brighter more crisp picture than the Sony...from what I've seen at Best Buy. Both are great TVs...but any additional info to help make the decision would be appreciated!!!

I think you covered it, when comparing the input lag, the Sony which only goes to 55 inch is 20 ms, Samsung 38 ms. You will be hard pressed to notice a difference. Both are good tvs, probably cant go wrong on either, last time I checked the Samsung was $200 cheaper . Good luck

Yeah, my guess is was a different panel, I notice no overdrive, smearing etc. Picture quality is not degraded one bit in game mode, very crisp picture.

That Sharp panel matter is still murky to me. Guys on here say Sharp makes the 60" version of the F7100, but someone called Samsung's tech people multiple times from different numbers and they said Samsung makes all the displays in the F7100 line. I didn't think to look at the TV frame thickness difference so I'll do that next time I am in Best Buy. I checked out the F7100 60" and W802A in person yesterday, mainly to see if the viewing angles were okay and they were good enough for the room I have.

I own a Sony KDS-50A2000 (SXRD) currently and it has been a good TV for me for the last 6+ years, so I do like Sony overall. Plus, the Simulview feature might be really cool to use with my PS3 (and PS4 when it comes out). The step up to 60" just seems pretty important given my viewing distance.

Bucknuts - do you have the 55" or 60" version of the F7100?

I don't have any experience with that samsung model but figured I would chime in after a few days with the 55" w802a. So far I've watched comcast cable on it, streamed some netflix video, and played a couple ps3 games. I've been really happy with it. I've never liked watching 3D on other TV's or in movie theaters. It would always make me feel sick but I find the passive 3D on the sony to be really good. I played gran turismo in 3D and thought it looked excellent. Never once felt sick or weird from watching it. All of the games I played with game mode on were flawless. If gaming is high on your list I think this TV would be an excellent choice.

Since you're on the AVS forum I assume you already have some kind of HT system. You'll need it with this TV because the speakers are pathetic. I replaced a 5 year old Sony LCD that had way better sound than this new one does. Even my wife who could care less about TVs commented on how bad it was. We usually never used the receiver for normal TV watching but now find that it's a necessity. That's my only complaint with it so far though. Everything else seems to be excellent for a mid grade TV.

I'm a pretty avid gamer with the Xbox360 and PS3 and looking forward to the XboxONE and PS4. That said here will be my break down of use for this TV.

45% - gaming

35% - HD TV (I watch predominately sports, and no SD)

20% - Movies (Blu-ray and AppleTV streaming)

The TV I am replacing is a 3 year old VIZIO XVT553SV. It is a decent LED TV with terrible local dimming (clouding issues). So the reason I've narrowed down to the 55W802A and 55F7100 is they both offer a similar small design footprint, both are 3D which I'm excited to use for gaming and movies, and both have good to great input lag. The Smart features don't do too much for me, I'll get most of those features through the game consoles or AppleTV anyway. A bright picture is important. My TV is mounted in a corner of a high-rise condo with floor to ceiling windows surrounding it!

Like I said, I'm leaning towards the Sony and will probably pull the trigger soon. I'll let you guys know my thoughts when I do. My wife thinks I'm crazy to get a new TV every 3 years!

I went ahead and ordered the 60" F7100 (F7050 from Costco). Figured that I can hook it up and put it through its paces with my PS3 and 360 and see if it is up to snuff for what I need for my video games. If not, Costco has a 90 day return policy on TVs so I have plenty of time to find out if I like it or not. If there just is too my input lag or the color overdrive thing is noticeable then I'll return it and go with the Sony. I really need to give it a try though since 60" is my ideal minimum size for my room now.

I'll let you gents know how it goes, especially in regard to gaming.

On a side note, it would be nice if the reviewing sites focused on gaming performance as one of their test areas for each TV. I wonder how many people bought a Panny ST60 due to the glowing reviews only to find out that the gaming performance is garbage on it? Kickstarter to start a HDTV gaming focused review site, anyone? lol

#14 ·
Congrats on ordering the TV...you are one step further than I am! You'll have to let me know how gaming feels on the set. 60" is killer! I wish I had the room for a 60".

I like your idea about a TV review site for gamers. It seems that CNET is "trying" to become a bit more relevant in that department with their new input lag testing. But someone should really put these TVs through their gaming paces and report back. Of course I think forums like this one will always be the best for getting mass opinion.

Good luck with the new TV!

Maytime, I am so glad I found this thread! I've been researching the Samsung 60" F7100 for my new tv but my main concern is Xbox gaming performance. As you already know there is practically no information on this anywhere and it's driving me crazy. I'm mostly concerned with motion blur and maybe a little on the input lag. Please don't forget to update us on your gaming experience with your new Samsung. Your report will probably be my deciding factor so...no pressure or anything. Congrats on the new tv and looking forward to your review.

These tv reviewing websites really need to get with the times and include gaming performance. Especially with the new generation consoles coming out soon. Can you imagine how awful it would be to be forced to sit down with the newest TVs on the market and play video games on them for a few days and then have to discuss it. I feel really bad for the reviewers that would have to put in the extra "work" to provide this info for us.

I just ordered the KDL-55W802A. The price came down on amazon to be the same as the UN55F7100, so it made my decision a bit easier. I should get the TV this Thursday. I'll post my impressions and some pics when I have it up and running.

I'm really excited to test out the Xbox and PS3! I will put the 3D (gaming and Blu-ray) through it's paces as well.

@Walker64

I'll be sure to post my honest opinions on it when it is delivered, hopefully by the end of this coming week at the latest. I play most FPS/RPG games and with FPS twitch type games (BF3/COD) you basically are screwed if your TV is slowing down your input times. I'll be sure to focus on input lag and the motion blur/color shadowing with my post on its performance. It shouldn't matter but I'll play both 360 and PS3. I think video game performance should be a standard review metric from now on given that even 40+ year olds are gamers these days. One article from CNET once a year on input lag numbers doesn't cut it for me.

@NINEraser

Congrats on the purchase. Honestly I probably would have bought the W802A if I felt a 55" was my ideal size. I really need the 60" for my new home's basement, so at least I'll have 90 days to figure out if the F7100 is something that fills all needs. Be sure to report back in this thread on its performance so others looking in this price/size range have some more info to go on.

@maytime

Sounds like we play the same games and are looking for the same qualities in our tv. So glad I found this thread! I really want to get the 60" but if input lag becomes a factor I could live with the 55. I'm open to other tvs but this Samsung is the one that I keep coming back to. I'm curious about the remote and 3d as well. Never had the opportunity to play a game in 3D before but I'm sure with the new generation consoles coming out soon 3D games will be more prevalent

@NINeraser

Looking forward to your review as well! Just curious, what was the deciding factor was that made you go for the Sony over the Samsung? I had not considered Sony previously but I'm certainly open to it.

@NINeraser

Looking forward to your review as well! Just curious, what was the deciding factor was that made you go for the Sony over the Samsung? I had not considered Sony previously but I'm certainly open to it.

My decision came down to quite a few factors.

1. I prefer Sony's history of stellar image processing to, at least to me, the unknown of Samsung.

2. I wanted Passive 3D

3. The Sony has the lowest input lag of any tested display this size.

4. The price came down to be even with the 55" Samsung

5. After seeing to 2 TVs a couple of times at Best Buy, I preferred the Sony's PQ and motion handling over the Samsung's

6. Off angle viewing seemed better to me on the Sony.

7. The Samsung I saw had very minor flash lighting in the corners, the Sony did not.

With all that said, it was still a difficult decision. I really like the look of the Samsung set. It also had a brighter picture. I'm hoping I made the right decision, and I'm excited to try out my new TV. I'll definitely post my impressions later this week.

I didn't realize the input lag on the Sony was so small! Wow! I'm a pretty decent COD player so I'm wondering what my input lag is now on this old plasma. I believe on the Samsung F7100 55" it's 38ms vs 43ms on the 60". Enough to tell a difference between the two??? Considering your Sony is 16ms I'd bet you can tell between the brands. I had not considered the different kinds of 3D. I'll have to look into that more. The one thing that has really worried me in this process besides motion blur and lag input has been the flash lighting issue. I have never seen this but I wasn't looking for it initially either. I have seen some Samsung reviews were it was mentioned but it seems like its just luck of the draw on the tv you get and if its an "acceptable" level of flash lighting. I'm sure it would drive me absolutely crazy but doesn't seem to be a way around it outside of pure luck. Correct me if I'm wrong. Preordered my Xbox 1 this week (despite my feeling about some of M$ new policies) and considering the PS4. I better get this TV picked out and ordered before I blow my entertainment budget for the year!

Bump to this thread!

I am also currently debating between a 55" F7100 and the 55" W802A. Any more thoughts/input between the two? My KDL-55NX720 recently failed on me and I'm leaning towards another Sony. I've read about a lot of clouding/panel issues with the Samsungs. Then again, they have more than twice the market share of Sony, so those failure numbers are bound to be higher anyways.

My 60" F7100 arrives on Saturday so I will have the weekend to fiddle with it and put it through its paces. I'll report back with my impressions on video game performance. If it sucks or has display issues, I might return it and just get the Sony and live with losing 5" of diagonal space.

I received my 55W802A yesterday and was able to set it up and test out a few things. First off, wow what a picture! The Sony handles motion and color extremely well.

During the day the screen is bright enough in my corner condo unit. Although the screen is glossier that I would have liked...it does show reflections a lot more than my previous Vizio set that had a matte screen. I will say that the Sony screen isn't extremely glossy...it is somewhere between matte and glossy.

So here is what I tested out: Uncharted 3 in 3D, US Open golf, NBA finals, 3D sample clips from the on board Sony Entertainment Network, and Avengers Bluray (wanted to try this in 3D but got an error that the signal wasn't supported) All of it looked and felt unbelievably crisp and clear. I found that the Soap Opera Effect is easily fixed by keeping the motion setting on TruCinema or Off. If it is set to Smooth motion then there is the SOE. There is a bit of flash lighting on completely black screens in a dark room, but nothing that is a deal breaker. The picture just pops much more than my 3year old Vizio did.

The native 3D is mostly spectacular. And the 2D to 3D convertion is handled really well. I'm looking forward to watching the Stanley Cup Finals in 3D! I did find the Sony glasses to be a bit small, as in the frames around the lenses are a bit visually intrusive. I have some LG passive glasses that viewing felt much more comfortable with. With the 3D being Passive I did notice horizontal black lines from my viewing distance...which admittedly is close at 7-8ft. Sitting further back at my couch you can't notice them at all.

I'm still messing with the settings to try and work out the best presets for movies, gaming, sports and tv. One setting that was mentioned the forums was CineMotion. I read that the preferred setting was CineMotion = Auto 1. I however was only able to see a setting for Auto or Off. Any thoughts on how to get Auto 1 to be available?

I'll post more thoughts when I've tested more settings. Overall, so far I am pleased with my decision. I just wish the screen was a bit more matte...but who knows, maybe then the picture wouldn't be as punchy. Good luck!

Also very interested in the gaming performance of the 7100. Looking forward to your review maytime.

I have another question, if I don't care about the smart TV stuff is there another TV that is cheaper, but the same quality w/o smart TV?

Got my 60" F7100 delivered today and setup using the picture settings that PirateCove recommended in the F7100 user thread. The picture for movies via PS3 is very solid, minimal edge bleed, no clouding, minimal flashlighting.

Gaming on the 360 looks great when Game Mode is on. I played a few rounds of BF3 and noticed no ill effects on input lag that caused me to do worse than before. I'm pretty good at the game and would have noticed right away if I was losing 50/50 firefights that I usually win. I also played Tomb Raider since it is a darker game and did not notice any ill effects from micro-dimming/clouding. Controls seemed responsive and I didn't notice any shadow trails or ghosting behind characters.

Just tried Uncharted 3 on PS3 and it looks good too, I don't notice any shadow trails or ghosting. So far, I'm happy with the 60" F7100, but Game Mode is buried under like 3 layers of menus so it is a pain to switch back and forth.
