Torn between Samsung f8500 64" and Sony r550 70"

Having a hard time deciding between these 2 displays.

I have a fairly bright room that my tv will be in with 3 big windows about 5 feet to the left. I had pretty much ruled out plasma until I read a few reviews on the Samsung saying that it performed well in bright rooms and had decent anti glare coating. Seating distance is about 12 feet. This will be mainly used for watching sports,hd programming and movies with maybe a little gaming thrown in here and there. Anything will be and upgrade I suppose from my current setup which is an 8 year old Sharp 46" lcd.

So my concerns are these. With the Sony I've seen some examples of backlight bleed on the edges and that angled viewing may be an issue. With the Samsung it seems the only issues are the humming noise from the power supply that people complaing about and the fact that it is a little bit smaller than the Sony and costs $1000 more.

It has been awhile since I've bought a new tv and I know that led has come along way, but how different are the black levels now between led and plasma? Are my concerns that I brought up warranted or is this just something I should expect with these newer displays and learn to live with minor issues.

Any insight into what might help me make a decision would be appreciated, thanks!

I saw the Samsung yesterday at a Magnolia store, and it looked very good. It was right next to a Panasonic TC-P65ZT60 plasma, and the Panasonic looked slightly dimmer. Unknown if both sets were calibrated. (I doubt it..) You will have limited off axis viewing with any LCD panel, so that is something to consider. The black levels on a plasma will be much better than an LCD. Flashlighting and screen uniformity issues do persist with LCD/LED technology. On the other hand, if you are a gamer, the Sony might be a better option for you - less worry about image retention. Your best bet would be to check the associated threads for the television that you are interested in purchasing.
