HDMI Splitter - PS3 output --> HDTV (video) & Receiver (audio)

Does anyone use an HDMI splitter to send Blu-Ray/PS3 video output to your HDTV and the audio output to your receiver? I ordered a new Samsung F7100 HDTV but am using a ~6.5 year old Onkyo 805 receiver that is HDMI v1.1. I'd like to be able to split the HDMI signal with a v1.4 splitter so I can get use out of 3D functionality but still send the LPCM audio to my receiver (not via optical audio output).

Anyone have an HDMI splitter that they use for this? I was thinking of trying the Monoprice one out since it is powered:

The splitter won't split the audio from the video, they'll remain the same on both outputs. Your old Onkyo receiver will still be receiving 3D video and so may not be able to handle the audio that accompanies it.

Yeah, I just hope that my receiver can still process the LPCM audio from my PS3 without the video signal throwing a wrench in that. I read online that people have been able to accomplish what I'm trying to do with that Monoprice splitter, but I think it is entirely up to how the 3 components all interact (receiver, TV, source) so hopefully the Onkyo can play nice.

why not just use optical out, you won't notice the difference.

Optical output can only send 2.0 LPCM audio, not the full multi-channel that HDMI can. And if I had the PS3 output audio down to DTS/DD5.1 I can tell a HUGE fidelity difference between that and uncompressed audio on my HT system.

the DTS and DD on blu-rays is much higher bitrate than on DVDs so it sounds much closer to lossless like truehd and dts master. But yeah if you have to have multi-channel LPCM than you can't use optical.

As with virtually (if not) all HDMI splitters < $100, the HDMI 1.1 EDID on the Onkyo will cause the PS3 to only output 2D video and standard DD/DTS audio. If you don't want to upgrade to an HDMI 1.4 AVR, your best bet is connecting the HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and an optical cable from the PS3 to the Onkyo which will pass the higher bitrate DD/DTS 5.1 audio on BDs as noted above.

My Onkyo 805 accepts multichannel PCM audio and I have my PS3 set to output in that format instead of DTS-MA/TrueHD codecs. If the splitter approach doesn't work I'll probably go buy the Onkyo TX-NR818...but I'd rather save the $700-$800 if I can do it with the splitters

Or you can just buy a BD player that comes with 2 HDMI ports. PS3 isn't that great of BD player anymore.

Not a bad idea...I'll look into it if my splitter attempt fails.

Unfortunately it will as noted by a number of reviews for that splitter. frown.gif

Aw weak, just saw the lastest review that says what I want to do won't work. Damn.
