Speakers for Stereo Set-up $6k Budget

Hi All,

I am planning on creating my first stereo-set up for strictly music listening. Initially the speakers will be used as is, however, when my budget permits I plan to add a dedicated sub. I plan on buying used to make the most out of my money.

My current considerations are B&W 802 Diamond (I found a pair for $5k used) and Tyler Acoustics D10 ($6.5k used), are there any other contenders you would give your consideration?

I appreciate your input!

Just be careful with those $1,200 Diamond tweeters as they are very fragile.

One time a dealer delivered a pair of 802D to my house and actually broke the diamond tweeter!

So if a local dealer can break a diamond tweeter, shipping might also!

But the 802D is a great choice.

My first choice would be the Revel Salon2/ Studio2.

My second choice would be the KEF Reference 207/2, 205/2.

My third choice would be B&W 802D.

- Paradigm Signature S8v3 on Audiogon.com - 1 yr. old, $6,200
- Paradigm Studio 100v5 on Audiogon.com - 4 mo. old, $3,100

Both pairs of speakers are reported to be in mint condition.

The best speakers I have ever heard in that price range are the Vandersteen Treo speakers.

I bought them; for $6000.

The sound is to die for. The bass is so good that the need for a subwoofer is questionable.

Once you hear them you will sneer at the other speakers in the same price range.

I do...lol.

There is a pair of Legacy Focus se up om Audiogon. I heard a demo of them a while back and liked them a lot. They appear to be like new. I have no affiliation.

Thanks again for everyone's input! A lot of good contenders here, I think it will just come down to whats available and what I can get the best deal on. I am located in Rochester NY.

Very intrigued by these speakers. The review on audioholics was pretty convincing. From the way it sounds these are pretty authoritative on the low end, so much so that a dedicated subwoofer may not be necessary, which is quite surprising to me seeing as the dual 12" woofers don't appear to be powered by an internal amplifier. Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of some frequency/SPL charts for these speakers? Details seem sparse on the newer ones with air motion tweeters.
