Yes, Brian, I know Dr. Hsu well (going on 14 years now) and I am far more familiar with all of his products than you... I have spent far more time listening and comparing CBM-170's, ARX A1B (of which, strangely, you have mentioned but never listened too) and HSU HB-1. As you know, HSU and Ascend are only about 30 mins away from each other and we have had countless customers bring HB-1 over to directly compare, as well as others who listen to HB-1 at HSU, buy their subwoofer and then end up purchasing CBM-170SE. These are very different loudspeakers, one having a horn loaded tweeter and the other not being horn loaded. I recommend HSU subwoofers regularly and have done far more to promote Poh Hsu's products than your naïve posts in this thread could ever hope to accomplish.
You see, Brian has an axe to grind... He went against my initial recommendation of using 340's in his rather huge room (system was not going to have rears and no subwoofer) and he instead settled for 170's (which he loved during his demo at our facility -- I should learn to record comments from people
) Once he tried them in his room, they didn't cut it for him and thus he requested a return (after only using them for a weekend at best). One of the speakers he returned was scratched and chipped on the bottom and rather than refusing the refund, Dina charged him a 15% re-stock fee on that speaker (keep in mind, 15% only on one of the speakers, not the pair or the entire purchase). Brian's been upset ever since.
Sorry for intruding but this has gone on far enough...
This isnt a pesonal beef I have with the Ascends. I am simply saying the Hsu's are better than the Ascends. I thought you guys had great customer service, even without the scratch, I did take it for the weekend and I absolutely think its fair that I had paid the restocking fee.
You need to note that this is coming from a consumer perspective to a bussiness product. If I were to state my opinions to OTHER members that are also on the consumers side it is different. However, if you come in here posting from a business perspective to a consumer, your customer service is prabably not that great after all.
There wasnt a chip on the speaker, Dina mentioned that there was a scratch, I looked at it, saw it and paid for the restocking free. That is that. It is your company policy, and I have no clue why you are posting here from a business to a consumer who tried out your product.
This is not a biased opinion. I did try out your speakers and they are fine for 2.0 desktop. For home theatre, the HSU's are better than the Ascends 170SE.
If you were smart and a growing business company that have what it takes to make it big, as with all business fundamentals, you would have suck it up and try to improve rather than coming to a forum as a business representative of Ascends and leaving a negative feedback to the consumers.
What are you thinking Ascend?
Its pretty sad actually. Not to mention you should put it in your own company policy that bought and exchaged products between you and your costumers should be kept privately.
I never said the Ascends are bad speakers, they are okay for the money, just not better tyhan the HSU's IMHO and that is that.
If you are growing a fit with your consumer base, simply make a better product! or lower your price, and that is also as simple as that.
We have Berringer 2040's which sound EXACTLY like the 170SE minus
$120. Edited by Brian323 - 6/30/13 at 11:59pm
