$1500 max budget for speakers & sub. any recommendations??? - Page 7

Glad you got your system Brian, glad you're happy. Now maybe the discussion can turn to helping the OP with his purchase.

This is now the official reference thread for the inevitable continuation of Ascend bashing. We all thank you for your contribution.

Goodbye and good luck.

Got my system up. I was originally gonna go with Satin Blacks but when I went to buy it at HSU today the HB1's were out of stock in Satin Black so I ended up getting the Rosewood 5.1 instead. (That should tell you something)

Hsu 5.1 in 13 x 13 x 9 room watching Dark Knight Rises Bluray. I will sum it up with a sentence.

I am at an IMAX theatre but w/ more detail and clarity.

OP, I promise you that you will NOT be dissapointed with Hsu 5.1 set-up.

I have NOT heard the Arx's and I heard they are in the same league as the Hsu's, but I guarantee you that again, you will NOT be dissapointed with the HSU 5.1 Set-up.

This is the final word. Peace and good luck with your purchase.

Arx does have a center available now its a single A1b that can be used on the side with the tweeter rotated. It would be a setup (form factor wise) like the Ascend Sierra 1 and Sierra 1 center.

For those interested in the Arx A2c and A3c, got an email from Audio Insider saying that they expect them sometime in September.

They said the same thing to me, "60 days". It seems they've been saying 60 days for a while now.

If you can up your budget about $250 and get IN-WALL sorrounds you can get the RSL 5.1 system. It got the best speaker system award for 2011 from Soundvision and other audio communities.

I never heard them personally but it seems to have good reviews.

id love to go in wall but im going to be moving within a yr or 2 and probably into a condo where i wont be able to put speakers into the walls.
If you have the space don't go in-wall. You make a lot of sacrifices for decor reasons.

I have an HSU 3.0 setup that I really enjoy. I have never heard the Ascends or Arx, but after reading this thread and seeing that many very well spoken, reasonable, and polite people prefer the Ascends, I am seriously considering sending the HSU's back and trying them.

FWIW, I have talked with HSU a number of times via email and they have been very responsive and helpful.

I don't think any particular speaker recommended in this thread (HSU, Ascend, or ARX) would be a wrong choice. In general, AVS is full of helpful and knowledgable people. You just have to learn for yourself who to listen to.

Enjoy the journey and good luck!

If my budget had been a bit bigger I would have gone Wharfedale 10.2s.

WIth all due respect, who cares if someone is rude, this is a tech- forum and morals dont do much here. Might as well send the Hsu's back, they are out of stock and people are in line! wink.gif

CJP3, I actually had some time and recorded bluray batman dark knight rises and I am currently uploading it on Youtube. Its played in Hsu 5.1 set up with STF-2 subwoofer in a 13 x 15 x 10 room.

Note that the sound will be better if you are plainly in a sealed room with carpet and dry walls. My TV room is 70% wood so it should sound alot better in a normal room.

It might not do much since it will be streamed on whatever speakers and audio card you have but I tink it will give you a taste of how Hsu sounds.

Will post the vid here once uploaded.

Peace.

Right. Won't do anything at all. It's completely useless to try to evaluate the sound of a 5.1 HT setup by listening to a YouTube recording of it. For that matter, useless for evaluating speakers at all.

Why would you say that? From this Video here (another owner of Hsu) I can KIND of get a feel of how Hsu sounds with music. There currently isnt any Videos with HSU in 5.1 MOVIE vieweing on the net s but I will put that up soon.

It shouldn't take a great deal of brain power to realize that listening to a pair of speakers through your speakers will sound like - your speakers. Think about it Brian.

HD and regular video sounds different from the same speakers and soundcard.

If signal or format of a source is making the difference, wouldnt it be the same that speakers would be able to be expressed and heard differently recorded with a same source and outputted with the same speakers or soundcard? We can count the frequency chart of speakers (dips or peaks or whatever you guys call it) as "formats" or "signals". Therefore, I think one that hears a youtube video of different speakers would be able to tell and get a feel of the very speakers that gets played being outout from the same speakers/soundcard.

This is logical and common sense.

Take it for instance that VIdeo I put up where another owner is playing a song using a Hsu 3.1 set-up. My computer speakers are like $5.00 logitech small speakers and they sound great with my speakers. Although I wont get a complete demo of the speakers sound through that very video, I can still hear the smoothness and crispness coming out of the Hsu's.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I can "get" the foundation "tone" of how Hsu's are built and sound overall through that Video. It sounds smooth, crisp, and full.

Do you really think I can hear the characteristics of Hsu speakers by listening to a YouTube recording played through my speakers??

Brian, I know that you're trying to be helpful, but may I just speak for everyone in asking that you honor your "this is the final word" statement?

I'm starting to lose brain cells by reading your comments. This can't be good.

Yeah. It's like trying to evaluate the quality of a computer monitor screen by looking at a video of it on your computer monitor. LOL

Then factor in the recording microphone itself, which is probably not calibrated. That just makes it even more impossible.

Anyway, since Brian insists, I listened to it. Based on what I heard in the video, his speakers

1) Have horrible soundstage and imaging.
2) Are completely lacking in detail resolution.
3) No bass.
4) Sound very thin and lifeless.

Ascend Acoustics speakers sound immensely better than that.
Those HSU sounded pretty thin through my desktop speakers but came alive when plugged to my avr with the sub on:rolleyes:

Sorry, your comments are hurting Dr HSU. I got to say though, for what it worth, those HSU bookshleves looks pretty nice and i have no doubt they sound even better.

thanks everyone for your help. as i said earlier ive narrowed down my choices to 3
HSU
Ascend
ARX

but no one here seems to be discussing a speaker & sub package for $1500 anymore, so im unsubscribing to this thread.

thanks again everyone for helping me narrow down my choice to 3, they all seem to be a good quality product!

Brian, you just need to stop. You are exposing your ignorance more and more with each post. Just stop. Do whatever you want with your own system, but stop spouting off like you know everything.smile.gif

There is a quote from Benjamin Franklin that applies here...:"It is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

How odd. To me first hand wiitnessing both speakers the Hsu's sound alot better. The other Youtube Video of another owner of Hsu playing music also sounds very good.

Do the speakers sound THIN in the yotube VIdeo of the music playing? Dont think so.

This is a prime example of a long time member Cel posting just to troll.

Dr.Hsu made subwoofers for 20 years or so, and the best subwoofers out there is made by Dr.Hsu. The speakers come from the same engineer Dr.Hsu, when counting in the factor that subwoofers add thickness and depth to speakers, and Dr.Hsu being the xpert at it, do you really think anyone would believe what you are saying? That they sound thin?

Also counting in the factors that subwoofers jobs are to hit the lowest frequencies, and Dr.Hsu knows how to hit the lowest frequencies with his subs, do you really think anyone is going to belive you when you say they have no detail?

Soundstage and imaging? Do you really think anyone is going to belive you when you say this knowing Dr.Hsu's speakers trademark is about soundstage?

C'mon man...

You can if the comments are made of a certain driving shot. Certainly you wont be able to "feel" it first hand but you will get an idea if you used your brain and past experiences of cars you drove.
