Upgrade advice for some old advent speakers.

I have been considering an upgrade for years and think I am finally ready to take the plunge. I think I'm going to start with my L/R and possibly center channel but need some advice on what will be the best route. And waiting until I have more money is an option as I am a believer in the "buy once, cry once" philosophy. I am aware that your front sound stage should all match and I would rather spend more money to add a matching center channel then bring down the quality of everything just to fit my budget.

Budget: $~1000
Use: about 70/30 home theater/music
Room: currently an open basement but will be moving in about a year and then they will be in a normal room or possibly a dedicated home theater.

Current system:

Receiver: Marantz SR4200
Amp: Audio Research D-52B (for L/R channels
Amp: marantz sr4200 for everything else
I also have another D-52B and a D-100B that I might eventually get fixed to power the rest of the system.
L/R: Advent Loudspeakers
C: cheap acoustic research bought over 10 years ago at ABC Warehouse
L/R surround: Cheap Sony bookshelves that I had laying around
Sub: velodyne vx-11 (although that will probably be replaced with a DIY as I find it to be too boomy for my tastes)

As you can see this is quite the hodge-podge system. I am trying to finally get serious and upgrade and want to know what options I have. I am not opposed to DIY either.

The only listening experience I have is with some PSB Image towers about 8 years ago and I thought they sounded great. I am somewhat familiar with focal as well but only from a car audio perspective. Clarity/quality sound is my first priority with volume being a close second.

Currently considering either PSB Image T6 or Focal 716v. I also do not have close access to any home theater stores that sell this type of equipment so listening to speakers is sadly almost out of the question. Although I will be making a trip from NW ohio to Grand Rapids MI next weekend and if I have time I will try to find a store around there to demo some of the equipment.

Check on Music Direct they are offering the 716's at $500 off. Excellent speaker at a good price.smile.gif

Thanks. That is $50 cheaper then I have seen them everywhere else. I am still leaning toward the PSB speakers based on reviews I have read. They seem to be an all around better speaker.

Both are excellent just depends on the type of sound you prefer. Better is in the ears of the listener. Try to see if you can pull off an audition. Good hunting:)

I would also take a look at RBH MC-6CT: http://rbhsound.com/mc6ct.php
Around the same price point and uses larger drivers. Also the front baffle has a small waveguide for the tweeter.

I believe I found a store in dayton that stocks both Focal and PSB speakers along with Paradigm - another often compared speaker to PSB. I'm going to try to make it down there in the next few weeks for a demo. Hopefully that should really help me decide the right path.

When my budget grows up, I want a pair of PSB T6's. biggrin.gif

With all speakers, in any price point, there are always many good choices - it's what makes it so fun (and agonizing).

"What HiFi" gave great reviews to the Dali Zensor 5.1 system

This is anchored by the Zensor 5 floorstander, which can be had for $1100 a pair - a couple hundred bucks cheaper than the PSB's if that ends up mattering:

Good luck!

Don't forget to bring some of your favorite CD's to demo with you. Enjoy the audition.smile.gif

Yea, I've been thinking about that. I don't do all that much music listening and what I do listen to isn't what I would call "high quality" (as in mostly mp3's). Given that this will mostly be for home theater use, I will probably just take some DVDs/Blu-rays with me. So far the only thing that has really jumped out at me is the scene from Dinosaurs where the egg travels. That has some great music. Also I will probably take something from the Star Wars series as that is what I'm most familiar with and possibly a scene from Lord of the rings. Any suggested scenes from these? Also what other Action/Adventure/Sci Fi movies have high quality sound?

I know most of this is personal preference but I want to make sure I start with a high quality recording for auditioning purposes. I'd hate to pick a movie with bad sound and be disappointed when I get home.
