Original Apple TV - Just got ... need advice

HI,

At a garage sale I got an old apple TV for $5. I have no idea anything about the thing...

It has a hard drive. I know that.

I recently bought a current AppleTV but returned it the same day because it didn't have Amazon Streaming (which is all we wanted it for.)

However,... For $5... I just want to play around with it ... provided it can still be used....

Anyone want to give me ideas or tips or warnings or something.

I still have one working you will just have to set it up using iTunes but it is dated 720p where as the ATV3 can do more apps and 1080p
besides mirroring if you have an iPhone 4s/5, iPad 3/4 or a 2011 and later Mac.

Thanks,

I did some looking around.

One option is put OSx 10.7 on it and make it like a very outdated mac mini...

Another option is to add XBMC and Mac Boxee through a USB hack deal.

I guess the last option is to sort of leave it's original funtionality....

I still think it will be fun to do something with.

That's a 1st gen Apple TV, I have one and it is still an excellent device with a $15 Broadcom Crystal HD card in it, load Crystalbuntu and enjoy XBMC and Amazon Prime streaming to your heart's content. Plus, it'll connect to your display at 1080p and play your full-size MakeMKV blu ray rips back at 1080p without breaking much of a sweat.

With Crystalbuntu 2 you can leave the original Apple OS in place if you prefer, though, since you don't seem too invested in the Apple ecosystem...and didn't much appreciate the much more capable Apple TV 3...there's really no reason to:

http://www.crystalbuntu.com

Rather than "a very outdated Mac Mini," an aTV 1 with the Broadcom card performs at least as well as, if not better than, a 2010 Mini.

That sounds like what I will do.

Thanks,

Just thought I would say ... I did exactly this.

I ordered the card for $15 pretty much exactly and it shipped with estimated delivery a month and a half from now... hopefully that's not correct.

In the mean time I have the Crystalbuntu installed and I'm learning how to set it up. ... Looks like it WILL replace a 2010 Mac mini in my case because I was using a 2010 MacMini as a music server but will pull that out and re-purpose it.

VERY Happy,... thanks for the advice ! smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif

I think delivery is gonna depend on where you bought it, best price for the card is on eBay but I'd doubt it would take that long...I've been getting Taiwan or China eBay items w/ standard shipping in about 10-12 days. Maybe the place you ordered from is out of stock?

Amazon says middle of August (month and a half) but a email from the seller says 10 days or so.

I'm not worried...

It's working good without the upgrade for now and I'm lost with the interface currently... I'll need time to learn how it works.
