On June 22, 2013, AVS Forum member Ivan Pino (ivanpino) hosted a gathering of 25 members at his home in Los Angeles, CA. I was privileged to attend and hang out with many fine folks who share a passion for all things AV, including Home Theater senior editor Tom Norton and two fellows who drove all the way from Fresno.
Pino has built a dedicated theater at the back of his garage with acoustic treatments and two couches, the second one on a raised platform so everyone has good sightlines to the screen. A JVC DLA-RS25 projector fires onto a 110-inch Stewart StudioTek 100 screen, while the sound is provided by three Triad Gold speakers in the front, four Triad Silver speakers for the side and rear surrounds, and four Boston Acoustics subwoofers. A new lamp had been installed in the projector, and it had about 100 hours on it by Saturday, so AVS member Ray Coronado (Rayjr) did a full calibration in the morning, which early-bird attendees found highly educational. The result was a stunning picture that kept the theater full throughout the event.
The equipment is located outside the theater in an open rack, making it easy to manage the connections and swap components as needed. Movies are loaded onto two Netgear NAS drives, and the content is served by a Dune HD. Also in the rack are an Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player, Xbox 360 game console, DirecTV receiver, Marantz AV8003 pre/pro, Parasound Halo 51 5-channel power amp, two monoblock amps for the back surrounds, and a B&K AVR to power the subs.
Pino was the grillmaster, serving up burgers and bacon-wrapped hot dogs to the hungry throng. After lunch, I raffled off some AVS T-shirts and a couple of Dolby demo discs provided by Coronado. Even more important, I talked with several members who are interested in contributing content to AVS Forum, and I look forward to working with them.
A grand time was had by all, and I thank Ivan Pino and his family for their gracious hospitality!
