How do I hook up my speakers to an Onkyo receiver?

I just bought an older used Onkyo receiver and I can't figure out where to hook up the speakers. I have two rear speakers and a center speaker which I think I have figured out, but my subwoofer only has connectors for speaker wire and I can't figure out where to connect it to my reciever. the receiver has two sets for center, with single and dual options, then left and right for rear, main and remote. It seems like everywhere i try to connect it i just end up with a low frequency humming noise. I know absolutely nothing about setting this thing up so any help would be great!

That looks to be the old fashioned type of sub which sits between the receiver and the L/R speakers.

You configure the AVR as 5.0 (no sub) so that it reroutes .1 LFE content to the L/R main channels. Connect the L/R speaker terminals on the AVR to the inputs on the sub and connect the speakers themselves to the outputs on the sub. Set the bass management crossover on the sub itself, not in the AVR. The sub will play the low frequencies below the crossover and send the frequencies above the crossover along to the L/R speakers.

The center and surround speakers are attached to the usual terminals on the receiver. If you set your center and surrounds to Small, the AVR will reroute the low frequencies to the L/R channels so that they get sent to the sub, too.

can you post a picture of the back of your subwoofer?

The only thing on the back of my subwoofer is on set of inputs for speaker wire. Since there's only one set I can't hook the speakers into the subwoofer and still route the subwoofer to the receiver can I?

What model sub do you have? If it just has a single speaker wire connection, I suspect it's a passive sub from an HTIB and likely will not work with a regular receiver.

Get a new sub.

All I know is it's a KLM, it doesn't say anything else. Is there a way that I can convert the speaker wire so I can plug it into the jack labeled "subwoofer" on the receiver?

Not if it is a passive sub from an HTIB. Does it have its own power?

The "adapter" is an amplifier.  Modern AVRs have line-level subwoofer outputs for powered subs.  If yours has only a speaker-type input, you need an amp to power it.  Better to replace it.
