I am in the final stages of my theater build found here using the tools I bought: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1406831/hawaii-home-theater-construction
I didn’t have any previous experience and, therefore, had few tools to start with. The question of how much did you spend on tools probably isn’t a perfect question as people start off with different levels of tools to begin with. For a project like this how many tools do you really need? Quite a few it turns out! Some are cheap and some are expensive. If I had to do all over again, which tools would I insist on based on performance and ease of job completion? There is probably only three to five tools that stand out…. a Festool track saw (number one on my list, an absolute must!), a Fein Multimaster, a drywall lift, and probably a planer and a router round off my list. Of course, there are many other required and optional tools to get the job done (chop saw, impact drill, level, razor blades, screw drivers, router table etc, etc on and on) but the ones that stand out that are unusual are the five listed above. I was also able to borrow some tools and started out with some donated tools from my dad which helped keep my bill down. Overall, I bought four out of my top five as well as some others (level, router table, and lots of smaller useful tools) but my bill is around 3K.
