AVS Meetup in NYC Went Underground

Before I left to attend CE Week in New York City last week, I invited local AVS members to join me at the Rare View Rooftop at Rare Bar & Grill on Thursday evening. When I got there, the rooftop was already at capacity—it was clearly smaller than I expected. So after about 10 folks gathered in the lobby, we were offered a table in one of the restaurant's rooms below street level, which we gratefully accepted. Good thing, too—when we emerged a couple of hours later, it was raining pretty steadily, so the rooftop would have been quite unpleasant after all.

Among the AVS members in attendance were Newsbreakers Mark Henninger (imagic), seen here closest to the camera on the left, and Mark D'Aria (bd2003) across the table from him. We were also joined by Geoff Tully (at the far end of the table on the left next to me), coordinator of the Ultra HD conference at CE Week, and Joe Kane (across from him), one of the speakers at the UHD conference and a highly influential video consultant and author of Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics, a popular setup and test Blu-ray.

A grand time was had by all, and I thank everyone who came out to gather and discuss our favorite topic. Also, special thanks to DTS, which provided copies of its 2013 demo Blu-ray for everyone who attended. I look forward to another meetup in New York the next time I'm there—hopefully, when it's not raining!

I don't think so; it's normally handed out to attendees of trade shows. But I'll see if they will supply more for other meetups.

Yep, was a good time! I got there early and went up to the rooftop and was immediately thinking "how on earth is everyone going to fit up here?" I would have missed everyone if I didn't go back down to the lobby to check.

My DTS disc got ruined in the rain though. frown.gif

Surly optical disc is fine, you mean the disc artwork, right?

Nah, the disc doesn't play back. No biggie, it was just a demo disc.

Scott: nice meeting you and fellow members of AVS. Hope we could have a bigger turnout from our fine city. Thanks also for the DTS demo disc. I will show Mark when him and I get together..

If you are looking for HD demo material in general you ought to check out the discs from our own members...

I hope we get to see the new bus somewhere in Texas soon. smile.gif There is plenty of space for the bus to park in the Lone Star State!

The simple things work the best when searching eBay. Try 2013 DTS demo disc. You can also do a search for demo disc and wade through a lot of stuff.
