1080i from Hard Drive VS HTPC DVD on LT-150?

HI

Before I go ahead and go through a lot of work and money does HD 1080i from say a hipix or MyHD look much better on a LT 150 than a DVD of the same flick?

DVD is run on a well tweaked out HTPC using the radeon card.

This is assuming the transfers are of equal quality. The Last Emperor comes to mind. The DVD is pitiful whereas the HBO HD version is stunning!

Anyone?

When you say transfers of equal quality, do you mean both are good? I'll assume so.

That out of the way, I think so. Viewing HD with a 7" CRT projector (that has less theoretical resolution than XGA as the sweetspot is 540p) HDTV showings of stuff I have on DVD looks noticeably nicer. It isn't jaw-dropping but it is easy to tell the difference.

On the other hand, I've heard some people don't like watching the HD transfers because HBO has taken to cropping 2.35:1 movies to 1.85:1. Personally I don't think all that much is lost in the super-widescreen to just widescreen conversion. The picture also gets larger. I don't like full-frame (4:3) crops, but that is a much larger reframing of the movie.
