If we look at amps, we have Sony, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, Marantz, Denon, Yamaha, Outlaw, Mcintosh, Onkyo, and maybe a few other obscure brands.

But for speakers...

JBL, Sony, Pioneer, Thiel, Klipsch, Energy, Yamaha, Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics, Bic America, MartinLogan, Cerwin Vega, Audio Engine, Bowers and Wilkins, Definitive, Outlaw Audio, DCM, SVSound, Mirage, JL Audio, HSu Research, Snell Acoustics, Paradigm, Bose, Dynaudio, Dayton Audio, Meridian, Krell , Monitor Audio, Vienna Acoustics, the list goes on and on.

So why do so many brands exist?

Because amps/receivers are more or less the same. Not much varying between amps now-a-days, other than added features.

But, speakers can vary greatly between brands and models. Speakers are more complicated objects.

I guess my only option is to go to best buy, do they have many different speakers you can listen to? I hate to spend money and go "enie minie miney mo" and be disappointed,.

I would start your research here.

Tell us your listening preferences, room size and budget.

From there, people can give you some ideas where to start.

Because it's a hell of a lot better than just a few choices.

Companies are ran by people; and people have differences of opinion and ideas of how things can be done better (or are just greedy and want that slice of pie.)

Why are there different brands of coffee, cereal, clothing. Why don't we ALL just do the EXACT same THING!

... Just Joking (or am i?)

Just wait until there is also a different internet on Mars with a 30minute light-speed delay, and moon countries that have completely different laws than anything seen on Earth. Fun Times! Fun Times!

Here is a page of information about the growing middle class, according to that page there is 4.8 billion middle class persons in 2012. Lets say that the top half of that are potential speaker owners, as lower middle class is pretty poor, so that is 2.4 billion potential speaker owners. I would say maybe a billion people are going to want speakers at some point, so that is a lot of speakers to sell. Anyone with a noticeable sliver of that marketshare is going to make millions of dollars. There is also all the businesses that need speakers, bars, theaters and all kinds of entertainment venues, corporate media presentation, etc. There is also the crazies like us who buy waaay too many speakers. Anyway, all told, a lot of speakers are going to need to be made to satisfy everyone, although the vast majority of those speakers aren't what we really consider hi-fi.

Because they can.
+1. So long as there's a buck to be made new companies will continue to arise to get their piece of the pie. But there does come a point where the market becomes saturated. Fair warning of that can be had when considering the fates of Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, Willys, American Motors, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Plymouth and Mercury, just to name a few.
