I've got a huge collection of media. Over 30TB worth. The collection of media itself is impressive. But I also have everything organized well, proper names, resolutions, year etc. My PC hardware is pretty good, better than most I'd say. My front end is set up to look awesome so it gives a bigger wow factor to the collection.
I put a lot of effort into media organization , making sure the cover art is the ones I like, meta data is right, and I have mostly HD material only so it looks and sounds great.
When I show it off it just impresses people. The projector and 7.1 surround are ok but lots have that- it seems like my media server and HTPC just are more impressive paired with it.
Many of my friends and family would love my set up but almost none are technical or geeky enough to pull it off , and certainly none pull it off as well as me.
Even hanging out in the HTPC forum a lot I get the sense even many if those guys don't really get what a "real" HTPC can do. Budget builds are nice - but the extra performance of nice set up pays dividends in the real world WOW factor.
A basic HTPC running everyday XBMC is not the full experience IMO. It's ok for the treadmill LCD, but not a real theater experience.
