Which Component Is Responsible For Adding Black Bars?

My question boils down to whether the information in a 2.35 movie is actually 1920x1080 (at a 2.35 aspect ratio), or if the black bars are encoded in the movie? Or, is your display responsible for adding the black bars to make it fit?

I'm wondering if the squeeze that's required for an A-lens arrangement is actually providing full resolution, or if those extra pixels are just interpolated from the reduced resolution image where the black bars are encoded as part of the video.

They're on the disk.

I think its been discussed that anamorphic blue-rays are on the horizon. But for now 2.40 movies have a working picture area in the neighborhood of 1920x800 (2.40). The rest is black.

So using an A-lens let you use all of the sensor in your PJ, but those pixels didn't necessarily exist in the original data. The quality of the image on the screen will depend to some degree on the interpolation algorithm used to "create" the new pixels, correct?

Correct "scaling algorithm".

I feel like I'm missing a subtlety there; could you elaborate a bit? I was thinking in terms of interpolation because it would map the original 2.35 pixels onto the full 16:9 sensor, but there is not a 1:1 correspondence. So there will be information that has to be created from the existing information. Are we saying the same thing?

Just semantics. "Scaling" is the common term we use with CIH. It is electronically resizing the video material taller, "stretching" it so the scope content fills the imaging chip.
