So no option to just buy the game outright and get all the characters at the beginning? It sounds like they're going to release characters after launch. Are they not going to be finished with the game by launch? This doesn't make sense, how do you progress through single player if you can't fight all the characters in the game? Something doesn't seem right.

Also, nice on including the first KI arcade game but it'd be sweet to get both of them. Kinda weird.

well, it fits my buying habits for fighters since I don't buy fighting games. But now, I can dabble and play with my friends when they ask me to without having to buy like the full SSFIV game. Play the free character. Buy any powerful characters. Leave the rest alone. If the F2P model was out for Street Fighter II, I would've only gotten Ryu and Chun Li. I don't play Blanka or any number of other characters.

And as far as the fighting games I have played, there's no single story that you progress through. You pick a character and you get a series of cutscenes that are tailored for that character in their particular story arc. So it's not like you have an incomplete overarching story.
Well in just about every fighting game I've ever played you progress through the roster of fighters until you reach the boss(es). The two previous KI's have adopted this model. How does a single player fighting game play out then if you can't fight the complete roster? Again something seems iffy about that. I agree though I tend to stick to a relatively few fighters and ignore the rest. KI though was one game where I liked playing them all as they were each pretty unique.

that's true. excellent points.

I remember watching my friends play KI at the arcade and the SNES. It was more fun for me to watch because I'm so bad at fighting games. maybe the F2P is the model for fighting games as Tekken has it. DOA will have it. Virtua Fighter. I think publishers can cater to both audiences with multiple packages. Offer the complete package for the hardcore fighters where it's max value per character. And offer them in smaller packages for measured consumption.

Ken Lobb on future characters...
Man that's pretty confusing. I mean I get it but damn just let me buy the game and try out all the characters. There's a total of 13 KI characters spread over the first two games (10 playable in each) so what it seems to me is that the single player will have a shorter story mode and they're wanting to focus on DLC for MP. Makes sense but it seems this is a trend in sacrificing SP to focus on MP and I don't really care for it. In FPS games I can understand but for fighting games, it seems to be somewhat new territory.

I do like the idea of topping off. So I buy a couple character for $10 for a total of 3 characters (which includes the free Jago). Then I get an epiphany and really like this game and want all the characters. I can then get their entire package without wasting money. It would've sucked to spend $10 and then have to spend $20 to get all the characters meaning I had to buy twice.

Thunder's stage looks good. His combos look pretty badass. I like the character color choices too. Definitely can't wait to see what Cinder looks like now.

Here's an update to the info posted earlier on how the game will work. It clears up quite a bit for me and makes more sense. I will buy the 40 buck version to get all the characters plus emulated KI1. Maybe emulated KI2 comes later?

I went back to check up on what's happening with the game...

Man, loving the girl characters! Sadira is hot. Orchid used to have that cheesy 90s uni but they managed to keep the outfit but make it a little less cheesy (still has cheese though).

Something about Sadira, although visually she looks cool, feels very DarkStalker'ish to me. Not sure if I like that. I think it's her combo moves/web things.

Although Jago was supposed to be her brother, she sure did lose her tan and get lightened up for this version of the game. I wonder what's up with that.

After 25 years of fighting games, it's kind of hard to be truly original. In every character, you can find similarities to other fighters in other fighting games.

Isn't Sadira a totally brand new character?

If it's emulated instead of a port, I'd certainly hope that they don't ignore the sequel. It runs on the exact same hardware as the original did.

But the few 3D arcade games from this era and onwards that have seen release in recent years are virtually always ports. The hardware is so complex that emulation is exponentially more difficult than it is for earlier arcade hardware. And with just 1 or perhaps 2 games involved, it's unlikely that emulation of mid 1990's arcade hardware would be more economical than just porting over the source code itself (Assuming that Rare has it all available).

according to this site... checking the killer instinct roms for MAME, there's a 1.0 and a 1.5. don't know what the differences are. and pricing for the tournament stick has been announced and it's a whopper...

http://www.killerinstinctcentral.com/classic-killer-instinct-port-is-the-arcade-version/

I asked the developers today during the Microsoft livestream which version of the original Killer Instinct players would be getting with their purchase of the Ultra Edition of the game. They confirmed that is the Arcade version of the game, but that there would be two different ROMS available.

They also confirmed (again) that the classic KI will not be playable online at launch, but they do hope to have that added later on. Achievements will also be included in the game, some of which will be very challenging to unlock.

http://www.killerinstinctonline.net/

Pricing has been revealed for the Killer Instinct fightstick. The Killer Instinct Tournament Edition 2 Fightstick for Xbox One will set you back $199.99 The controller will be available at launch (11/22/13) with the Xbox One and KI3!

http://www.killerinstinctcentral.com/madcatz-killer-instinct-tournament-edition-2-fightstick-now-available-for-pre-order/

Internal Access
The Tournament Edition 2 opens up to allow access to inner storage and components. Featuring dedicated storage compartments, you’ll always have room for those extra tools and parts.

Removable Bezel and Clear Top Panel
Using the included screwdriver tool – with interchangeable hex and flat heads – the easily removable bezel and clear top panel allow easy customization for artwork. With a unique design featuring holes that go around the action buttons, you can swap in custom artwork without having to remove buttons or fumble with confusing wires.

Lock/Unlock Button
A lock button on the control module provides the ability to disable use of View and Menu functionality, and also prevents use of the Xbox button. No more accidental interruptions or automatic forfeitures in key moments during tournament matches!

Adjustable LED Lighting
Built-in LEDs light up your FightStick during gameplay. Toggle between OFF/ON, and HAPTIC, which allows the LEDs to light up using rumble data. Using the joystick to switch between 12 different settings, you can easily adjust the brightness of the buttons’ LED effects.

and is Jago short??? next to Sadira, he looks really short.

now here's a cool vid with real full length matches...

after watching that, I love the viciousness of Sabrewulf's moves. They just look so brutal, especially when compared to Jago's comparatively pedestrian moves. And who could not love Sadira???

Cool, thanks for sharing this.

Odd to see the Jago person not simply fireball the entire time, especially against Sabrewulf (that was my experience when I played all the time in arcades). Nice Sabrewulf moves, very stylish! smile.gif

Now THAT'S the KI I remember. Orchid brings back some memories. Man I can't wait to play as her.

Started playing this game again. I noticed with Sadira I play much better with her if I use the thumb stick and not the D-pad. May have to try the thumb stick for the other characters and see how it goes as well.

My Ultra Combo (32 hit I believe). Not impressed with the video quality even though it is supposed to be 720P. The playback looks terrible.
