Strange bug that alters your post total...

BIG BUG - I discovered that the software this website uses can change the number of posts you have credited to your account.

Yesterday I was at 2999 and submitted another post expecting to reach 3000. Instead my post total was knocked down to 2500, a loss of 500 posts.

Not a big deal for some people but when you spent part of your day at AVS helping other people with problems it feels like a slap.

I contacted the feedback support people and they told me there was nothing they could do to correct the problem.

Seems like poor programming to me.

I'd be willing to bet that they cleaned up some old threads and in turn you "lost" posts. Pretty much all forums do this because storage/hosting costs money.

I looked at the last six months of activity for your account, and only one of your posts shows as having been deleted, and that was done by you.

Mike, thanks for looking. But as I originally posted it's a bug in your software that allowed the post count to go from 2999 to 2500 without leaving a sign that it had occurred, at least on your end.

I still believe it has to do with old posts, far before 6 months ago. What happens is they clean up (Delete) old threads, usually many at a time, and when that occurs a chunk of posts will disappear with no trace to you or admins as it wasn't the post that was deleted, it was the actual thread. Unless the admin knows this occurred or properly correlates it, they won't know.

Either way, post count is overrated and doesn't mean anything. I've seen people that have 30k+ posts in forums and go into each thread and posts with 5 word sentence fragments and/or posts in threads that are nothing but constant banter about nothing. Not saying that is what you do but to any person who frequents many forums for years, they certainly don't care how many times someone has posted. Just make each post count and that's all that matters.

While I certainly don't disagree about people with 'inflated' post counts I try hard not to be a contributor that posts a +1 reply, etc.

A loss of exactly 500 posts doesn't strike me as being from deleted threads if in fact that actually occurs.

My complaint here would be unnecessary if my post count could be restored to what it should be. But the administrators here tell me it can't be done which seems like poor software if errors can't be corrected or overridden.

I don't know how "Huddler Tech" forums work, I know on vBulletin post count can be altered with the correct admin privileges. There is no other explanation to the altered post count than old threads deleted.

Actually, with the new platform, even when a post is deleted, your post count remains the same. It never decreases. There is also no longer a way to manually manipulate a post count as there was in the old platform. That made this all the more puzzling. So the team pulled a database snapshot from March 31st and the OP's post count was only at 2219 then. From there, you can look at recent posts and the math doesn't indicate anywhere 500 could be missing from.

Okay, you've convinced me - I'm delusional. Let's drop this whole thing.

Thanks.
