MLK had a dream. I do too. My dream is that all these multi-hour, multi-night competition/reality shows will drop back to one hour each week. My wife faithfully watches 'The Voice', same as she faithfully watched 'American Idol' for years, same as we watched DWTS for years. Three hours a week over two nights is just too much. But that's better, in some small way, than the five
hours over three
nights this show was a month or two ago. CBS's 'Survivor' has somehow managed with only one hour a week for eons now. God bless 'em.
And my wife, God bless her
, has to watch every minute of it. The judges comments are always some variation on "You're Amazing!
, You're Incredible!
You're the greatest talent I've ever seen and I wish I still had you on my team!". In fact, it's amazing how many ways there are to say "Amazing!". At least Simon Cowell provided some small entertainment value in terms of dissing these kids every now and then. That's why he became the zillion dollar man with his own
competition show, I guess.
Now I know it's cheap programming for the networks. Certainly a lot cheaper than a serious, highly produced drama, and waaaaay
more profitable. But these multi-night, multi-hour shows suck too much oxygen out of the prime time atmosphere, IMHO. All that said, my wife will breathlessly watch this season's 'Voice' all the way to the tear-filled finale when yet another young, attractive, marginally talented person will achieve their 15 minutes of fame. I'm sure it will be amazing.
