Optoma - Worthwhile and Trustworthy?

I have a (basically dead) Optoma HD81-LV that is apparently still under warranty.

I called Optoma service, and they said they couldn't warranty service it b/c it's been end-of-life'd, but that I could send it in as an out-of-warranty repair and they could replace it with comparable projector (TBD) for the cost of what it would cost to repair ("maybe $500").

This seems a bit off to me (kinda defeats point of warranty), but whatever. I'm also not too happy that it took a bunch of projectors to get one that worked... is this standard for Optoma projectors? The official HD81-LV thread wasn't too kind on the brand for similar experiences.

Anyway... should I risk "maybe $500" for a "comparable" Optoma projector? Or continue my search for a projector...

Kind of hard to decide if you don't even know which projector it will be.

If you take the $500, (or more?) and add in about $380, you can get a new Benq 1070. http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-W1070-Theater-Projector-Silver/dp/B00A2T6X0K
If they won't tell you what the 5yr old pj will be replaced with, this might be a better route to go, if the Benq will work in your setup?

Good points; the BenQ 1070 looked good, but it couldn't throw 92" at 14'. My other constraint is needing to fit in a 16" x 16" box.

So, I suppose I should shop for something that fits instead of risking for a mystery projector...

Any suggestions? Or, where I might even look?

A good price/strengths comparison you can start with. http://www.avsforum.com/t/1391476/coderguys-top-projector-picks
