Some people do make the mistake of having their systems too off center. i.e. one speaker in a corner and the other virtually in the middle of the wall length. Those two speakers are going to sound quite different from each other. Kind of defeats the purpose of buying a pair of speakers.
A quick and easy way to tell if there isn't enough acoustic symmetry is to play a full range pink noise through one speaker at a time and notice how much of a pitch change there is between the two. An individual frequency response measurement of each speaker at a time will be more revealing of the different sound fields they may be placed in.
It may not be a problem you would notice from just listening to the speakers until you actually fix the problem and realise how much better they could have been all along.
