Help me decide: Denon AVR-1713, Pioneer SC-1222-K, Pioneer SC-1522-K, or Yamaha HTR-7065?

I currently have an Onkyo HT-RC160 from a 3-year-old HTIB system. I also purchased a Denon AVR-1713, but I'm not terribly impressed with it (still within the 30-day return window).

Budget is $500-ish (willing to go to $600 for the SC-1522-K because it's such a good deal... I think I can still get my hands on one).

From among the following receivers, which one would you pick, and why?

Denon AVR-1713 (paid about $330)

Pioneer SC-1222-K ($470 at Costco)

Pioneer SC-1522-K ($600 at Costco)

Yamaha HTR-7065 ($480 at Costco)

Something else?

I think explaining what speakers you are using would help people advise you better.

Sure, of course… Ascend CMT-340 SE mains and center, and a PSA XV-15 sub for a nice little 3.1 setup.

I would go with the 1522. I just got the 1222 myself, and I like it. However, I am running smaller speakers B & W M1's. With the 1522, you get a lot more power, 4k passthrough, 9.2 channels, and 12v triggers for an amp upgrade in the future. For the price difference, I think it's worth it. I've heard good thinks about Yamaha amps too, but I went with the pioneer because of the class D amplification, which is very versatile for pairing with different speakers. Just my insight but there are much more qualified people on this site to answer your question.

Thanks. That's the one I'm leaning towards right now, but it's also the most difficult one to get (4-hour drive each way to the nearest Costco that has one).

What is it that you don't like about the 1713? What do you feel you would get from the 1222 or the 1522 that you aren't getting for the Denon? Also - I'm not sure if you have a best buy nearby but they have them on clearance for $280.

Something related to Audyssey (I think). See my other thread that describes how I can't get the 1713 loud enough.

Volume, room for expansion.

Which one? The 1713?

You're comparing receivers that are in different classes. The AVR-1713 is a $399 receiver while the SC-1522 MSRP for $1500.

Sure with discounts and clearance sales the prices are a lot closer but if I was given those 4 choices I'd go with the SC-1522 in a heartbeat.

If you can show me another $1500 receiver that's selling for $600, I'll gladly include it in the comparison. ;-) The reason why I included the 1713 is because I already purchased it about 3 weeks ago, and also because it doesn't seem like spending $500-600 gets you a ton more than the 1713 in the land of Denon.

I'm open to any and all suggestions at a price point of $600 and below. If Costco carries it, even better. Local returns are easier than online returns, and Costco returns are the easiest local returns I know of.

Sorry, the 1713.

Ultimately it's all about needs. I would either keep the Denon or go with the 1522. They are in two totally different classes though. If you think you need the added features of the pioneer then I think it's a no brainer. Keep in mind, the Pioneer is twice as much as the denon. And that cost is well worth it, if you're going to take advantage of it.

Both are great receivers.

Right. I do have a budget, and price does matter, but for something I plan to keep for a while, I think it's worth it. I couldn't find anything else comparable for $600.
