Like the title says I'm looking to measure/build interest for a 15" UXL group buy/custom run.

Dayton Ultimax et al are fine sure, but I really want to get some serious throw (30mm+) in a compact package. Erich has a dual-opposed 15" flat pack in the works, and this pairing would make for an absolute monster.

Custom run for carbon fiber cone and high throw of the UXL-18. Modifications to the UXL motor would need to be done and a different basket chosen for extended excursion. Mark says it's definitely doable and reminds "steel pricing drops with quantity just like anything else."

Preliminary pricing ballpark is $300-340. Possibly less if we can get a decent quantity going.

Data-Bass review of the UXL-18: http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=driver&id=37 and review/measurements of it as 4.2 ft3 system: http://www.data-bass.com/data?page=system&id=75

Poll questions for varying levels of interest- (if you're not interested at all just don't vote, obviously). If you are interested, post a quantity you'd likely be after if possible so we can gauge where we're at.

Hope HuskerOmaha doesn't mind, good pic of the UXL-18 in cabs:

Do you have any ideas or estimates on what the prices would be?
depeneding on price i could see myself picking up 2 or maybe 4

The 15 or the 18?
Provided they would come in at substantially less $$ compared to the LMS-r, I would grab a pair to finish a year old project. Possibly 4 actually, depending on vc arrangement and if I sell my LMS pair... being in Canada certainly helps the cost for me too compared to anything from PE.

Would we expect to see a reasonably similar relative performance compared to the TC offerings? What I mean is should the uxl 15 stack up against the lms-r 15 in a similar way to how the uxl 18 does vs. the lms-u 18? I know it will never be an apples to apples deal, just curious if anyone has any insight.

Kicking the tires, depending on time and money I'd want 1 or 2.

Nice picture.

Are the 15" cones available in the same material as the 18" UXLs most of us have along with the carbon fiber dustcaps?

I could be talked into 4 of them and making a pair of dual opposed for a future room. It would be much easier to handle space wise than buying a pair of the 21s for me.

Pricing I don't know about, I'll see if he's willing to give a rough ballpark- but this is very early.

Personally I think this would outperform an LMS-R 15; I don't think it sits atop the food chain like the LMS-Ultra does for 18's. LMS-R is only 25mm- and I know it doesn't have an upper hand on inductance (I think they'd be similar). I'm far from an expert though- maybe we can get some experienced opinions.

Husker- carbon fiber cones for sure, I don't know about dust-caps but don't see why that's not doable.

Those carbon fiber cones are really expensive, that will add more than you to the cost. It would be a shame if Mark built these and everyone just lost interest, since It would likely be 6 months before he could get everything to even make them, maybe even more time. I do agree that it's a good idea but I also think the price will be in the $400 range if he uses the carbon fiber cones and you'll geta bunch of people turning up their noses at anything over $250. Quality costs money, these are not going to be $250 cheap drivers.

The carbon fiber cones sure do look sweet though. I'm loving the UXL-18 I got a couple weeks ago.

I would be interested in a couple. Are there any flat packs available for these UXL-18s?
They fit in the 4cu ft flat packs if you take the rubber gasket off.

Mark has preliminary pricing around $300-340. Possibly less if we can get a decent quantity going.

If you voted and haven't posted a quantity you'd be interested in (with your interest level) please do that, and I'm going to start a tally in the first post to see where we're at.
The poll only covers the UXL-15, I would be more interested in the 18s
post #15 of 32
Well I think you can buy the 18 today. The 15 would be special order for people who can't fit an 18. I think.

Tally started. If I've got you in the wrong category, let me know.

atabea: 18's have been around awhile and I believe can currently be ordered- this is just building interest for a custom run/group buy of 15s.

Remember there is going to be shipping on top of that. to you guys in the US, probably like $60-$70 I'd imagine.
At $300 to $340 each, I would be game for 2 of them, depending on the shipping and over all total cost.

I'd consider one for a small sealed bedroom music system, the uxl are ideal in sealed boxes, correct?

What is the shipping price to Canada?

Small sealed is perfect, 18-20" cube at most I'd say.

I'd just throw in 60lbs and rough box dimensions in your shipping service calculator from Winnipeg to your house to get an idea on what that would run you.
what is the VC impedance available? 2+2?

Anything is possible at this stage- though it would be best to have a consensus at some point. What's your vote?
4+4 probably

yeah i'd rather group buy for 18" over 15" too biggrin.gif

I feel like the normal price on the 18" isn't great for canada because the shipping is the same to canada as to the states, so that means canadian's pay ~30 bucks extra for shipping

No, he takes a loss shipping to the US. Go on FEDEX and see for yourself how much it costs to ship a 75lbs box across Canada. His shipping prices are very fair. Plus he gets a good deal shipping from Canada to the US, it's not the same as someone shipping from the US to Canada. He pretty much loss money on every sub shipped, as it costs more to actually ship it than he charges because he pretty much has to to stay in business being based in Canada.. You have to remember it's Canada and we don't have the same rates as the guys in the US get.
