New Theater Room

Thread Starter
I'm putting together a small theater room and would like some opinions. My room is 19 x 12 x 8 (LxWxH) and it has inward sloping walls because of the roof. I'm about to put a Epson 5020ub and an Elite 100" screen. The problem I'm having is with audio. I'm not an audiophile and I don't listen to music much in my spare time. This room will mainly be for movies and video games. For my receiver I'm looking at the Sony STR-DN1040 and for my speakers I'm considering:

Emptek E55 w/ E56 center
Fluance XLHTB
Pioneer SP-PK52

Those are at the top of my list with the Emp E55 being the upper end of my budget. I'm also buying my subwoofer seperate and I'm really looking at SVS, specifically the PC12-Plus or PC13-Ultra. There is also a SVS 25-31 CS Plus for sale locally on craigslist that I'm thinking about to keep cost down.

Another thing I'm considering is installing Insul-Shield on the back wall at least.

Here are two pics of my room. It's a mess right now. Any tips would be gladly appreciated. Thanks.

Can you provide an actual budget??? Are you looking for 5.1 or 7.1 or 7.2?

For just the speakers, I don't want to spend much more than 1500 and under 1000 for the sub. If I can spend less that would be awesome. I would like to hit the price point where I'm getting the most for my money and increasingly smaller returns there after. I really don't know if that is possible because I'm completely new to home audio.

I have never heard the first two on your list so I can't comment on them. If you are considering the Pioneers, I would recommend you check out the Infinity Primus P363 if you live near a Fry's Electronics. They are on sale right now for $107 each. The P163 bookshelves are $60 each That puts you at $334 then get the center channel P351. Those usually go for about $200 or you can get a third P363 if you can fit it or a third P163. Either option should get you well under budget and sound pretty good. Spend the remainder of your budget on room treatments or add it to your sub fund.

Not familiar with that screen, but if it's acoustically transparent and you can put the speakers behind it, I would get a third P363 for the center channel.

I would definitely consider dual subs for that room, it will help smooth your frequency response and give you more even bass throughout.

I would look at a pair of Power Sound Audio XV-15 for $1600, and then get five HSU HB-1 MK2 bookshelf speakers for your front three and surrounds.

Ok so your budget for speakers and subs is $2500. I would probably allow $1500 for subs and $1000 for the speakers.

For the subs I do agree go for 2 subs. I would look at 2 of: Rythmik LV12R, PSA XV15, Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus or EX, SVS PB or PC12 NSD, Hsu VTF2 or 3 MK4. Or at a very minimum 2 SVS PB1000.

Speakers: Hsu Horn speakers as mentioned, BIC Acoustech Platinum Series, BIC America Formula Series, Infinity Primus Series, Polk Monitor Series.

Agreed. Your room is small enough that dual subs within your budget would be plenty for that space, and you'll get a smoother frequency response in the room. Dual Rythmik LV12Rs would more than do the job.

For speakers, I recommend Ascend Acoustics CMT-340 SE and CMT-340 SE center mini towers for the front, and then their CMB-170 SE or HTM-200 SE (if you need to wall mount) for the surrounds. These would run you a little over $1000 shipped. That, and the dual Rythmik LV12Rs would be bring you well under your budget.

Here's a review by an AVS member that has the same setup with one of the Rythmiks: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1478626/ascend-acoustic-5-1-setup-review
