Case fan not going faster than 950 rpm

Hi

I have Wesena ITX7 case with Intel i3 21xx CPU. Whatever settings I choose for the fans my case fan does not turn faster than 950 rpm. As load increases CPU fan starts going faster and faster making lot of noise, I think if case fan started rotating little faster CPU fan wont have to go so fast and it will make for quieter operation. This was not a big issue since most of the time cpu fan stayed lower than 1300 rpm. But after I added 3.5 inch second HDD (originally I had only SSD in there) situation has worsened significantly. There is not a lot of clearance between CPU heatsink and lower side of the HDD, also additional wires have made everything little crowded making airflow further restricted. This case has sliding bracket for the HDD which makes arranging wires properly very hard. Now CPU fan rotates at more than 1500 rpm most of the time and even going above 2000 rpm its really noisy, but still case fan stays below 1000 rpm, and I cant get it to turn faster than that.

What can I do to make things better? This case fan came with the case, would replacing it help? Would adding second fan help? Has anyone added second fan to Wesena ITX7 case? I don't think there is provision in the case for mounting second fan.

80mm fan @950rpm may be too slow for some system. Replace it with a quiet 1400-1600rpm fan like NEXUS or SilenX. You may be able to control fan speed according to CPU temperature but this depends on mb.

I have used that case a few times and while it looks fantastic the cooling isn't ideal. There is one location for the fan and I don't believe that there is another location for a second. The issue with adding a hard drive is that you have now added a lot of additional heat. Since heat rises the case is at a disadvantage since it does not have any ventilation (active via a fan or passive via holes) in the top/cover of the case.

Add to the fact that if your ITX build is like most there is an almost unavoidable nest of wiring inside the case that further complicates adequate airflow.



I have a feeling that a single 80mm fan just isn't going to be able to make a significant change for you with the added hard drive. I have used similar cases in the past and have had to use a hole saw to cut an opening in the top of the case above the CPU to get the CPU fan air to breathe. I think you are in a similar scenario.

Starting with a new fan is a good idea but I am just letting you know my experience with similar cases. Running the hard drive outside the case might be another option (that I am sure you don't want to hear).

Thank you Assassin and renethx for the suggestions. Looks like I dont have lot of choices due to case and nature of min-itx form factor. I probably should have gone with 2.5 in HDD.
I am thinking of trying following one by one until it helps ->
1. Get better case fan (Currently I am thinking of SilenX or Noctua NF-R8)
2. If there is a possibility of somehow fitting in another fan in this case, would like to try that, since I will have a spare fan from above.
3. Drill some holes in the top of the case
4. Get different case or try 2.5 in HDD.

Does this seem reasonable approach? For the fans should I go with PWM or not?

A PWM fan requires a PWM fan controller in the motherboard to control the fan speed (although it can be controlled by voltage too). What mb do you have? There are three options depending on your mb:

1. If your mb has a chassis fan connector that controls fan speed by voltage (3-pin), then buy a Noctua, SilenX or NEXUS and control the fan speed by voltage.
2. If your mb has a chassis fan connector that controls fan speed by PWM (4-pin), then buy a Noctua PWM (or another) and control the fan speed by PWM.
3. If your mb has a chassis fan connector that does not control fan speed (3-pin, always supplies 12V), then get SilenX or NEXUS and keep it run at the full speed (1400-1500rpm should be quiet enough).

Check SpeedFan.

My mb is ASRock H77M-ITX. It looks like it has "1 x Chassis Fan connector (1 x 4-pin)" so I guess I need PWM fan.

I tried SpeedFan as well as utility ASRock includes for fan monitoring and control but whatever settings I used for the current case fan, I could not get it to turn faster. Looks like if I get something like Noctua PWM NF-R8 I will be able to make it go faster.
