Should I try to get my Marantz SR7001 fixed or buy another AVR ?

I have been using a Marantz SR7001 in my theater room for a number of years. It's always worked good for me.

Last night, I was watching something on my projector, and then all of a sudden the Marantz had a problem and shutoff, and the red standby light started blinking. I naturally figured that somehow one of the speaker wires was touching another speaker wire. So, I pulled it out and tried to check the back of it to see if a wire was touching something, but everything seemed perfectly fine. I unplugged the unit for about 10 minutes, and tried again. This time, the unit wouldn't turn on at all, but it would have the blinking standby light.

So, I completely unplugged everything from the receiver. I let it sit for about an hour. I took it into my kitchen, and put it on the kitchen counter and tried plugging it in there. All I got was the blinking red standby light, the unit would not turn on at all. So I left it unplugged, and figured I check on it in the morning.

Today I tried it, and same thing. Can't get it to turn on, and all I get is the blinking red standby light. I'm guessing something went wrong with it, and it needs some type of repair. I have a few questions that I'm hoping somebody could answer:

1. Is it worth it to try to get it repaired ?

2. Where would I get it repaired at (long out of warranty) ?

3. I paid about $600 for the thing a number of years ago via accessories4less. It was a B Stock item or whatever. If the best idea is to simply buy a new AVR, what could I get in the $500 range that would have the same or better sound quality ?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I used to have a couple extra receivers, but ended up selling them off on Craigslist because they were taking up too much space, and right now I have nothing that I can use in that room. So, I'm a bit desperate to figure out what to do, because I can't really use my theater room at all until I figure out a solution to this problem.

You can buy the 7001 on ebay working for under $200. I doubt any repair shops are going to fix that for you for less than that but you should be able to get a free estimate.

Do you think it's worth it for me to get a used one for $200, or would I be better off throwing that $200 towards a totally new AVR ? My problem is, I want the same kind of sound quality (or better) as the SR7001. I see deals all the time at Fry's Electronics for some decent Onkyo receivers, but I just don't think I'm going to get the kind of sound quality that I get with the Marantz.

I'm not sure what the brand new equivalent would be to the Marantz SR7001. Maybe Accessories4less is still selling B Stock Marantz stuff, and maybe they have the newer versions in the $600 range.

Basically, I'm totally out of the loop when it comes to new AVR's, and really had no interest in getting one, but now that this receiver has crapped out on me, I'm kinda forced to find one in a hurry.

I have been going through the same problem today too, i have a Marantz SR5004, and i do get the red light, it suffers from the pop sound, it does do that but not until recently did it make a very loud pop still works fine though besides the over heating and i feel exactly the same way, i been looking at some receivers but i do have a tight budget, you really should look at acessories4less again they have a lot of great Marantz receivers very discounted, though if my budget was wasn't so constrained i would spend up to a grand or so, get yourself a good amp for now and take your time and do your research and make sure you get a long warranty. You really should consider looking at the marketplace here they have a lot of great stuff too.

Any of the Marantz models will use at the very least Audyssey MultEQ which should result in a better sound than your 7001. The only current model "new in box" in your budget would be the lowest level model 1504 so you may want to consider going to Accessories4Less again.

You don't mention if you purchased the 5004 from AC4L as well, although if not and you purchased new, the 5004 has a 3 year warranty. If it has expired, and you purchased with a credit card, some card issuers will add a 4th year (or 2nd year to an AC4L refurbished purchase). Amex will for sure as well some MC/Visa issuers.

Crutchfield has the Marantz SR 5007 brand new for $599, with a full three year Marantz warranty. That would be your BEST bet !! The SR 5007 is last years model. http://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/marantz_5007.html
