DIY Fractal Antenna Experience

So I have an old cheapo USB HDTV Tuner card, the AverMedia Volar Max. It's never done a good job with reception, and we live a fair distance from the transmitters. I saw some buzz about fractal antenna technology, so I dug in and looked around. Having failed to locate formulas, or free software that could assist in calculating the design, I decided to just build a big one (to be put in the attic at some point), and just rely upon the wide band nature of these antennas (and cross my fingers).

Now I finished up my work pretty late, and the wife was in bed, so I had to test the unit downstairs (ground level), inside a room with walls between me and the direction of the signal. For a baseline comparison, when using a medium price amplified antenna, I'd get maybe 8 channels.

I selected the following design for my attempt, which I mocked up in CorelDRAW before the build:



It's a big antenna. I figured in the attic it won't be seen, so go whole hog. I totally guessed at the dimensions that might work, and used some pretty heavy magnet wire I had laying around (like probably almost as thick as coat hanger).

I printed the design using "tiled printing", then taped the sheets together on a piece of cardboard to make up the whole. I affixed the wire to the cardboard/pattern using punched holes and zip ties:





When all was said and done, after a LOT of bending of wire with a wrench, and hooking up a coax to it (didn't yet bother with proper transformer), it looked like this:



When I hooked it up for the first time, it was on the floor (ground level), and I didn't expect much.

It got 21 channels! I must have done something right!

I figured I'd post the results here in case anyone else decides to go this road.

I have often wondered why fractal TV antennas were not already on the market. I thought maybe the Winegard and Solid Signal flat antennas were some sort of derivative?

Honestly, it looks a lot like your "standard" 8-bay UHF antenna (CM4228) with lots of bends ... although, perhaps it solves the transmission line issues.

OTOH, It would be interesting to see how it compares to the aforementioned antenna (the original version ... not the remix.)

Fractals have NEVER improved the Gain or SWR of any antenna I've seen....their ONLY advantage is to shrink the overall size, such as maintaining about a 10-in Whisker Length, but bent so that the overall size is smaller. So I'm not going to waste any of MY time on this mindless exercise, which has no supporting 4nec2 analysis curves with accompanying 4nec2 File.....nor even a list of wire segments or Mathematical Formula that can be readily turned into a 4nec2 File.....it isn't all that aesthetically pleasing as some other Fractal Antennas I've seen either....

Whoa! Sorry to have rubbed you the wrong way with my little amateur fractal experiment. Certainly not trying to persuade anyone to build it, but just sharing an experience I had in trying it out.

My goals were based upon 2 assumptions/guesses:

1) Although I did not figure that my antenna would outperform a professionally purpose built unit, I did figure that fractal designs in general were more forgiving in that they (from what I have read) operated over a wider range of frequencies.

2) Antennas comprised of fractal shapes (again, from my limited research), tend to allow for larger antenna performance in a smaller form factor.

As for NEC2 analysis, I am freshly new to this. I have evaluated a couple of NEC2 derived applications, but am more interested as a software engineer in building a C# wrapper that encapsulates the somewhat arcane card format input files into more easily manageable classes that I can leverage from within programs that I write in order to test a wide range of antenna concepts (including this one I built), and generate the NEC files automatically for them.

With as many bends and segments as these types of antennas have, it seemed like manually entering them into some of these front-end apps I found would be an extremely time consuming endeavor. Whereas building programs to generate the inputs, then feed them through NEC, then extract and interpret the results, could be very interesting, especially when I might utilize some ANN action and random path algorithms into long running analysis sequences.

My only excitement in posting this was that I was inspired to give an antenna a try, and that I was excited that it beat out an amplified antenna I'd bought from the store.

As for the cosmetic appearance of the unit, I suppose it may become an issue if it displeases any mice I might get in the attic where it now lives.

There's nothing wrong with experimenting, in the course of human history, there have probably been far more technological advances made by simple trial and error and learning from the "mistakes" than there have been by over analyzing something with mathematics.

That being said, that fact that your fractal antenna outperforms your 'store bought amplified antenna' would probably not be a shock to folks that frequent this sub-forum. wink.gif

I'm actually interested to see where this might go. My only point was that your design appears to be roughly the same size as a CM4228 and even appears to mimic the 8 separate "bow ties," so I'm not sure what the technical or size advantage(s) would be other than you made it out of materials you had on hand.

Yeah, having the materials on hand was probably a big factor in the decision to give it a try. The effort behind all the bending was a pain in the ass to say the least! As for out-performing the store-bought antenna, well, probably not that big an achievement, granted. But it still put a smile on my face.

I forgot to mention that as far as dimensions and such, I included in the diagram the only dimensions I thought would be needed to simulate the antenna, as those 2 dimensions shown are the same repeated length as every other segment in the entire antenna. Roughly 1 inch, and roughly 2 inches. All angles are 90 degrees, and the wire gauge is 13AWG Magnet wire.

But there are a LOT of segments.

As I am currently (at this very moment) writing out my C# classes that generate NEC files from values I plug in, it would be really helpful if there was someone out there who might answer an occasional question I have about the NEC format itself. I will happily post the resulting library for free for anyone to use once I have it baked.

The C# classes are meant to do the following:

1) Allow a .NET programmer to instantiate classes that represent cards (complete with enumerations for option based ones).
2) Generate a file with a stack of those cards included in a given order.
3) Optionally given a path to the executable, feed the file to the executable and interpret the results.

So I've cobbled together a program to generate what I believe to be geometry data for the segments in the antenna. I am at a bit of a loss what cards I should use after these in order to analyze the performance of the antenna in the ordinary broadcast television frequency ranges, or what to do with the output data once I do figure those cads out.

Does anyone have an idea what cards should follow for an analysis in the US broadcast television bands? Or what to do with the output once I have it?

UHF Fractal Pisan-Cross (Symbol of the "Leaning" City of Pisa):

I uploaded 4nec2 analysis for the above code listing, with three assumptions for where the Balun is connected:

The third (Mod2) was actually better than I expected: SWR Max=4.1 and usable Raw Gain = 5 to 10 dBi on many channels, but Gain Holes on 470, 566 & 698 MHz. I added GW500 to enclose the Fractal and GW501 as the Simulated SOURCE Wire, interconnecting the Left and Right halves of the Cross (like a HUGE Bowtie). This worked better than I expected: SWR Max=4.1 and usable Raw Gain 5 to 10 dBi on many channels, but Gain Holes on 470, 566 & 698 MHz.

Better performance MAY OR MAY NOT be provided with modifications to the Fractal structure....perhaps by disconnecting some interconnections...FYI: Commenting out GW238 & GW487 eliminated the Gain Hole on 566 MHz, but SWR Max=5.8 on 470 MHz...the 4nec2 File is included in the link above if you want to fiddle with it. Perhaps each of the four smaller Crosses can be fed separately???

Thanks for putting together those plots and helping me understand the NEC file format more! The antenna lives in the attic with a cheap old amp I had laying around. I might have to go and experiment with some of your mod ideas.

You mentioned that you got 21 channels when “it was on the floor (ground level)“… how many more did you get when you put it in the attic :0)
